Diplomatic Immunity? Predatory priests shouldn't be Vatican envoys The Dallas Morning News 9/3/03 "A year after Pope John Paul II declared that there is "no place in the priesthood or religious life for those who would harm the young," we learn that one of his closest advisers knew about just such a priest in the Vatican diplomatic corps - and did nothing to remove him." http://www.snapnetwork.org/news/vatican/diplomatic_immunity.htm
Is Trauma Being Trivialized? By Felicia R. Lee 9/6/03 "Post-traumatic stress disorder is a good diagnosis," said Bessel van der Kolk, director of the Trauma Center in Boston, which is affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine. "I see a lot of kids molested by priests, people tortured, people beginning to come back from Iraq. Maybe in some circles it's used for political reasons or misused, but it's a useful diagnosis." "We may not all agree with all the criteria in the diagnosis, but I think in the current debate we're dealing with backlash," he continued. "There was backlash against Vietnam veterans when PTSD was first used. In the late 80's and early 90's there was backlash against research on sexual abuse, and in the 90's there was controversy about false memory. There are cycles of trauma and then cycles of denial." http://www.nytimes.com/2003/09/06/arts/06TRAU.html?ex=1063425600&en=fa945d7254436ce0&ei=5062&partner=GOOGLE

Priests, docs under DA probe by Tom Mashberg, Eric Convey and Robin Washington 9/6/03 "Prosecutors are investigating whether psychiatrists at Massachusetts General Hospital violated state law by failing to report sexual abuse by priests in the 1990s, the Herald has learned. The probe focuses on whether a panel of MGH psychiatrists called the Priest Treaters Group, which met to discuss at least 17 clergy abusers from 1994 to 1997, ignored the state's mandated reporting statute. That law requires certain parties - including physicians - to report all suspicions of child abuse to law enforcement authorities." http://www2.bostonherald.com/news/local_regional/inve09062003.htm

Torture at the Push of a Button
By Jonathan Turley

Last week accused sniper John Allen Muhammad raised a point of legal procedure and received a shocking response -- literally. Muhammad objected to a medical test that had not been ordered by the court or discussed with his attorney. In response to his refusal to cooperate, the guards activated a stun belt that sent a powerful electrical charge through his body. While few people in this region have sympathy for Muhammad, the use of a 50,000-volt shock was a disturbing introduction to this common device. In fact, the use of the stun belt in such a circumstance is unlawful but not unique. Stun belts have been denounced internationally as a violation of basic human rights. Local government and Congress should insist on new guidelines, if not a ban, on the use of these devices. washingtonpost.com
