Dear fellow campaigners of the world fighting for the better world.

A team of researchers at Kyeonghee University Hospital's Infertility
Clinic in Korea announced Monday(14. Dec.) that it succeeded in a
human cloning test. And, Korean Federation for Environmental
Movement(KFEM) released a statement criticizing the reckless
experiment on the same day. Today(15. Dec) KFEM and other civic and
environmental organizations of Korea held a protesting campaign in
front of Kyeonghee University Hospital.

I would like to let you know this news and would like to get some
advice on fighting against the stupid scientists.

Could you please visit homepages of Ministry of Science and Technology
(http://www.most.go.kr/), Ministry of Health and
Welfare(http://www.mohw.go.kr) and Kyeonghee University
Hospital(http://www.khmc.or.kr/), and express your concerns about
human cloning?

In Korea, there is no regulation on cloning, now. KFEM and some other
NGOs are going to ask the government to make a law on biosafety and
bioethics. It would be much helpful if you can give me some advice.

Thank You.

Human Cloning Test Succeeds

The Chosun-Ilbo, 15. Dec. 1998

A team of researchers at Kyeonghee University Hospital's Infertility
Clinic announced Monday that it succeeded in a human cloning test in
which they transplanted an ovum with a replaced cell nucleus.
Researchers Kim Seung-bo and Lee Bo-yeon removed the nucleus of an
ovum from a woman in her thirties, and replaced it with a somatic
cell(2n) and saw the ovum successfully reach cell division and
segmentation.

According to a report issued by Kim and Lee, "we were able to confirm
division up to the fourth cell stage, the stage of embryo development
when a test tube embryo is usually placed back in the uterus, where it
then further develops into a fetus." This is the second time a human
cell has been cloned, following a team of Scottish researchers who
first cloned a live animal, 'Dolly' a sheep.

Kim and Lee assert that they performed the experiment for research
purposes only, and had no intentions of actually cloning a human baby
"because it is inconsistent with ethical regulations to transfer a
cloned embryo into a human uterus." Nevertheless, the team's claims
are expected to heat up the ethical debate surrounding genetic
engineering in Korea.

Civic Groups Protest 'Human' Cloning

The Chosun-Ilbo, 16. Dec. 1998

Members of the 'Life Safety Ethics Association' held a demonstration
Tuesday in front of Kyonghee University calling for a halt to
experiments on human cloning. The association, composed of members of
various civic groups including Green Korea, were reacting to an
announcement from a research team Monday that they had successfully
cloned a human fetus by nuclear transplant and had let it grow to
segmentation stage.

Professor Lee Bo-yon, head of the research team said that the
experiment was not designed to clone human beings but an ongoing
series to clone specific organs for transplant.

Representative Lee Sang-hee of the Grand National Party (GNP) called
for the speeding up of the passage of the life science bill that
governs research in this area. The draft has been stuck at the
committee stage since December 7.
