(B (JOpinion on Hollinger's newsprint hegemony is generally divided between despair and fury. As a result of buying control of the Southam newspaper chain and combining it with his existing holdings, Black put himself where he seems happiest -- on trial as the Great Satan of Canadian media.
(B (JThe case for the prosecution is presented in a new book by Maude Barlow and James Winter, The Big Black Book (Stoddart, $18.95 paper). It is remarkable for being as tedious, one-dimensional and mean-spirited as its subjects. Recycling material from past books, speeches and op-ed pieces, the authors argue that Hollinger's domination of Canadian newspapers, combined with the paleoconservative views of Black and his wife, veteran journalist Barbara Amiel Black (who now holds the title of vice-president, editorial, at Hollinger) bodes ill for the land.

These have been chopped up and reorganized into categories of infamy: the Blacks lack sympathy for people who aren't rich, they curry favor with the powerful and famous, they view the conduct of business as a form of warfare, they think journalists are often left-wing and lazy, they think cutting payrolls is a good way to make money, they dislike feminism and minority rights campaigns, and they think Canada is a bit of a provincial backwater compared to the U.S. or Britain. In short, the Blacks appear to conform to the spoiled, arrogant, glib and self-absorbed stereotype of the late-20th century tycoon and tycoonette.
(B (JThe point of The Big Black Book is not just that the Blacks are dreadful people with noxious opinions, but that, as the minds behind a major chunk of Canada's news media, their opinions may be force-fed to the unsuspecting citizenry. In this view, newspapers and a free press in general are "democracy's oxygen," without which we may slide into demagoguery and the rule of an oligarchy that controls the flow of news and opinion.

(B (J Conrad Black's Southam Newspapers have distorted the results of academic research in order to blame the feminist movement for violence and anger in young women.
(B (J Southam falsified the results of a qualitative study by researchers at Toronto's Earlscourt Child and Family Centre, which found increasing anger and violence among some young girls from 16 families who were attending an anger-management program.
(B (J Southam splashed a story on front pages across the country on Saturday Oct. 23. In the story, Southam blamed "feminism" for allegedly "confusing" young girls about how to act, resulting in violence.
(B (J According to the news reports, the majority of the girls, aged six to 12, "reported physical or psychological trauma at an early age, leading to violent behaviour..." Southam reported that "the number in treatment has doubled to one girl for every two boys," and that many of the girls had very poor relationships with their mothers, just as their mothers had with their own mothers.
