UK police open Calvi murder inquiry Sally Bolton and agencies 9/30/03 "Police in Britain today opened a murder inquiry into the death of Roberto Calvi, a Mafia-linked Italian banker whose body was found hanging beneath a London bridge in 1982.The mysterious death of the Milanese financier, who was nicknamed "God's banker" because of his connections to the Vatican, has been a pet subject of conspiracy theorists for more than 20 years. Although the first inquest into Calvi's death returned a verdict of suicide, his family have long claimed that he was murdered. This theory was confirmed by a recent Italian investigation which, in July this year, issued its final report into the circumstances of his death. Calvi was found dead in June 1982, hanging beneath Blackfriars Bridge. The discovery came just days after Banco Ambrosiano, a Vatican-based bank of which he was president, collapsed with debts of $1.3bn (�0.8bn). However, Calvi's business connections reveal motives for murder. The Banco Ambrosiano had dealt not only with the Cosa Nostra, but also with the Vatican's financial arm, the Institute for the Works of Religion, and P2, a highly influential but illegal Masonic lodge of which Calvi was a member. In October last year, Rome prosecutors, who had been investigating the case since 1998, announced the results of forensic tests on Calvi's exhumed remains. The results showed it was most likely that he had been strung up from underneath the bridge by his killers. Calvi's pockets were weighed down with bricks and stone, suggesting a Masonic connection. Blackfriars, or Fratelli Neri, is the nickname for the Italian Freemasons, who swear that those who betray the brotherhood will be weighed down with stones and drowned. But in December 2002, a Mafia supergrass told police that Calvi had been murdered by the mob for stealing funds they had handed to him to launder. The supergrass accused a convicted Mafioso, Pippo Calo, of ordering the hit. Questioned during a civil trial about Rev. Barry Glendinning's ordination as a Catholic priest in 1964, Bishop John Sherlock agreed the church had made a mistake. He added during cross-examination by London lawyer Gordon Cudmore the decision to ordain someone to the priesthood is one of the most awesome responsibilities a bishop has. Kingston faces another abuse case By Douglas Belkin, Globe Staff, 10/31/03 "Kingston - A town jolted by the alleged rape of a boy by a selectman just weeks ago began wrestling with another crisis yesterday when a respected School Committee member was formally charged with sneaking over to a house, plying three teenage girls there with alcohol, and groping and videotaping them." "The case is the latest in a series that have beset this coastal town of 11,000, 32 miles south of Boston. In 1989, a 13-year-old girl, Melissa Benoit, was raped and murdered here. Two years ago, a college student from Kingston, Jonathan Rizzo, was slain in a series of murders by Gary Sampson, who is now awaiting sentencing. Last year, a Kingston priest, Monsignor Frederick J. Ryan, resigned amid allegations that he had molested three teenage boys 20 years ago. And over the last 14 years, four Kingston police officers have been accused of sex crimes. Reuters Reps: U.S. Overpaying Halliburton for Gas Wednesday October 29, 7:23 pm ET By Susan Cornwell
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. government is paying Vice President Dick Cheney's former firm Halliburton (NYSE:HAL - News) "enormous sums" -- $2.65 a gallon -- for gasoline imported into Iraq from Kuwait, two lawmakers charged on Wednesday.
Democrats Rep. Henry Waxman of California and Rep. John Dingell of Michigan said this gross overpayment was made worse by the fact that the U.S. government was turning around and reselling the gasoline in Iraq for four to 15 cents a gallon. In a letter of complaint sent to President Bush's national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, the two lawmakers said experts they consulted think the cost of buying and transporting gasoline from Kuwait into Iraq should cost less than $1 a gallon.
The Iraqi oil company SOMO is paying only 97 cents a gallon to import gasoline from Kuwait to Iraq, they said.
