A greater recognition of the impact of psychological abuse and neglect on children is prompting a committee of experts to recommend changes to Quebec's Youth Protection Act....Children living in psychologically abusive environments - and that includes children who are constantly belittled or denied parental affection - lag behind in school and social skills, are more likely to suffer from depression as children and adults, and are more likely to get in trouble with the law, he said. Godman, director of youth protection for Batshaw Youth and Family Centres, was part of the 10-member committee that submitted its lengthy report yesterday to the Health and Social Services Department. The two women still get fighting mad about how Mendocino County officials and the local news media, and later their counterparts in San Francisco, turned a blind eye to the Rev. Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple. Jones arrived in Mendocino County in 1965, and he and his followers quickly infiltrated the local political and government establishments.
