Condit Sues Tabloids Over Intern By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS EST PALM BEACH, Fla., Dec. 19 � Former Representative Gary A. Condit sued The National Enquirer and other tabloids for $209 million on Friday, saying they falsely connected him with the killing of Chandra Levy, a Washington intern, in 2001. Mr. Condit, a California Democrat, says that the Enquirer, Globe and Star Magazine tabloids, along with their parent company, American Media Inc., maliciously published defamatory statements that he "was involved in deviant and perverted sexual conduct, which directly or indirectly led to the kidnapping and/or murder of Ms. Levy," according to the suit filed in Circuit Court in Palm Beach County. The general counsel for American Media, Michael Kahane, said that the company, which is based in Boca Raton, "will vigorously defend any suit filed by Mr. Condit" and that he expected it to be dismissed. The lawsuit details 45 pages of headlines the Mr. Condit says were false and defamatory. It also says the tabloids paid for false statements "in a calculated effort" to increase profits.
