Terror fears step up in Europe

Dec 29, 2003

Europe's fears of a terror attack during the end-of-year holiday period have
deepened as Britain warned a plot may be in its final stages in Saudi
Arabia, Italy revealed the Vatican could be targeted, and Cyprus arrested
five Pakistanis acting suspiciously at an airport.

The anxiety added to concerns already created by the French government's
decision to cancel Air France flights between Paris and Los Angeles over
Christmas after US officials claimed they had intelligence that Al-Qaeda
operatives planned to use them in a September 11-style attack.
The developments came as security forces in the United States and Europe
were on heightened alert for any suspicious activity, particularly involving
aircraft and airports.
The British foreign office , on its website, issued a travel advisory
warning that "terrorists are planning further attacks in Saudi Arabia, and
that these could be in the final stages of preparation".
The announcement followed a report in Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper
saying Islamic extremists had plotted to run small planes into a British
passenger aircraft in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
It quoted the opposition Conservative party's spokesman on homeland
security, Patrick Mercer, as saying two would-be suicide pilots were
arrested before they could carry out the attack.
The official Saudi news agency SPA quoted a Saudi security official as
saying the report was "not true".
British Airways suspended flights to Saudi Arabia in mid-August after
receiving a threat about air travel in the country, but resumed them in
September.
Britain has been on its own heightened state of alert against a terrorist
attack since the weekend before the November 20 suicide bomb attacks on the
British consulate and HSBC bank in the Turkish metropolis Istanbul.
Also on Monday, the British government said it was deploying an unspecified
number of armed sky marshalls on British passenger planes "in response to
the present heightened state of alert in the USA".
The increased vigilance followed the decision by France's government to
cancel Air France flights between Paris and Los Angeles on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day at the request of US authorities, who said they had
intercepted electronic communication between Al-Qaeda members suggesting
those planes were to be used for attacks.
Although careful screening of the stranded passengers yielded nothing
suspicious, according to French officials, the fact that the flights were
scrapped spoke loudly of the shared anxiety between Europe and the United
States that a spectacular attack was in the offing.
Italy's press gave headlines to a revelation by Prime Minister Silvio
Berlusconi that the Vatican may have been the target of a Christmas Day
attack plot.
The newspaper Libero quoted Berlusconi as saying he had spent most of
Christmas Eve tackling "specific and verified" information of a plot to fly
hijacked planes or fire a missile into the Vatican.
However, Berlusconi's office denied that the prime minister had given a
formal interview to the paper, which said the remarks were made at a
Christmas Eve meeting with journalists.
Corriere della Sera said the information came from a report written by a
junior officer in the Sardinian police "who had learned from one of his
sources - informed by a Sardinian businessman - that an attack on the
Vatican was planned for Christmas night."
According to La Repubblica, the attack was to be made with either a "plane
or a missile". It said that "a group of Muslims... an Islamic religious
sect" was behind the plan.
La Stampa , another paper, said the intelligence security services had given
little credence to the information, although security measures were stepped
up.
That included, according to Italian media, the closure of the city's
airspace between Christmas Eve and December 29.
In Cyprus, meanwhile, authorities said five Pakistanis had been arrested
after loitering around the island's airport of Paphos.
The five, who had all entered the country as students, faced charges of
conspiracy to commit a crime relating to terrorist acts and would appear in
court this week police said.
State radio quoted Assistant Police Chief Soteris Charalambous as saying the
suspects had allegedly lied to airport staff by telling them they were
waiting for a friend arriving on a flight from Birmingham, England.
But Charalambous said a police check on the suspects' story found neither
the passenger nor the flight existed.
