Each new round of bombing has been accompanied by a new round of propaganda intended to convince viewers that NATO's unprecedented military campaign, illegal under international law, is being carried out as a ploy to somehow save these refugees. It is disturbing enough when government officials use portrayals of human misery to legitimize military objectives, especially considering that the Albanians were expelled from Yugoslavia after the NATO bombardments began. But a recent report from Reuters seems to indicate an even darker tone of "Ugly American" cynicism in the first major battle of the New World Order. Kosovo refugees have begun tossing U.S.-donated civilian MRE [meal-ready-to-eat] rations into "fetid trenches and streams filled with garbage and excrement" according to Reuters, and "several families were seen huddling around campfires using boxes of rations to help fuel the flames." As newspapers nationwide run propagandistic images of Albanians desperately retrieving rations from distribution sites, piles of unopened MRE packages litter the grounds of makeshift refugee camps. Refugees complain that the rations -- labelled "A Food Gift From the People of the United States of America" -- are inedible and have made many people sick. "We don't eat it because the children get a fever and throw up and are going to be poisoned," said Selvie Gashi.
