--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- The EPA Inspector General's report issued in August, 2003, alerted the world that at the behest of the White House, the EPA lied about air quality in Lower Manhattan following 9/11. However now that the ensuing uproar has died down in the media, no concrete steps are being taken to correct the dangerous inadequacies the report found in EPA's testing and cleanup program. According to the New York Post on August 10, 2003, a survey by Downtown Rebounds revealed that 30% of Lower Manhattan residents still suffered respiratory symptoms following 9/11. Dr. Joan Reibman at NYU and Dr. Stephen Levin at Mt. Sinai have also found respiratory symptoms among residents and office workers which mirror those found in Ground Zero workers. But more data on affected populations are needed. A government agency such as CDC should set up a database to which physicians, particularly in New York but also in the rest of the country, would report any increase in illnesses, whether respiratory or otherwise, among people who were caught in the cloud, who volunteered or worked at Ground Zero or who live, work or study in affected areas. Such a database is not within the current parameters of the NYC Health Department's WTC Registry.
