This eventually led him to Osama bin Laden's training camps in Afghanistan, where he trained with the most aggressive and terrifying mujahadeen in the world. But when a commander asked him to raid a town in Kashmir that would include hostage taking and the killing of civilians, his life took another turn. As he was fighting jihad in Chechnya, terrorist attacks across the world shocked him and he became disillusioned by the way some were using Islam to further their own ends or to attack innocents. Collins's autobiographical account, which is as much about the US as it is about Muslim radicalism, tells about his horrific childhood growing up in poverty in California, his experience in maximum security juvenile prison, his conversion to Islam, training in Bin Laden's camps, fighting the Serbs in Bosnia, and his eventual recruitment by US intelligence (who displayed, in his view, a profound xenophobia and ignorance about the terrorists).
