-Caveat Lector-
Actually E.H. Harriman died in 1909, two years before the breakup of Standard Oil.  His successor at the railroad until his own death in 1932 was the father of Bonesman Robert A. Lovett.  The father, Robert S. Lovett, went to Union Pacific headquarters from Houston, Texas, where he had been a partner in the law firm  now called Baker & Botts.  So there was a close connection of the UP management in Omaha to Houston business, which was mostly controlled by the Baker family, as legal counsel to the Rice and Farish families--along with the law firm called Andrews, Kurth--which controlled the Howard Hughes empire and the oil related business of Humble Oil, which became Exxon.  It was one of Humble Oil's founders, W.S. Farish, Sr. who was head of Standard Oil of New Jersey (later Exxon), while it was doing business with German I.G. Farben corporation in violation of U.S. law.

Harriman died in September of 1909, and with his death the wizard touch was clearly gone. What would have been the later history of the Union Pacific had he lived can be only conjectured. The new management, with Judge Robert S. Lovett at its head, continued the broad and efficient operation which had characterized Mr. Harriman's regime, but it soon abandoned the policy of further growth and expansion. ...The great Standard Oil and Tobacco trusts were dissolved in this period, and a suit which was brought to divorce the Union Pacific and the Southern Pacific Company was finally decided against the Union Pacific, with the result that the two big properties were separated. The Union Pacific turned a large amount of its Southern Pacific stock holdings over to the Pennsylvania Railroad, in exchange for which it received from the Pennsylvania the remainder of the Baltimore and Ohio stock which the Pennsylvania interests had retained after the sale to the Union Pacific in 1906. Immediately after this, the Union Pacific management, seeing no particular advantage in retaining an interest in the Baltimore and Ohio, gave the shares to its own stockholders in a special dividend.

Edward Harriman died in 1909. His eldest son, Averell, began his railroad career in 1913 at the age of 22, when he came to Omaha, Nebraska, for a two-year apprenticeship under UP President A. L. Mohler. When Judge Robert Lovett, chairman of the board, died in 1932, Averell took over. In 1941, President Roosevelt tapped Averell as ambassador to Russia. Averell turned over the chairmanship of the railroad to his younger brother, Roland. After the war, Averell stayed in public service and Roland remained chairman until 1953, when he resigned to become head of the American Red Cross. In that capacity he served as many presidents as Averell. Roland remained a director until his death in 1978, bringing a close to the Harriman era.

William Stamps Farish II (1881 February 23 Mayersville, Mississippi to 1942 November 29 Millbrook NY)

Son of William Stamps Farish (1843-1899) and Katherine Maude Power (1860-1931)[1], cousin of Jefferson Davis [2] (For unknown reasons, his father is not usually counted in the sequence.)

He married Libbie Randon Rice in Houston on 1911 June 1. They had a son and a daughter. He was a founding member of American Petroleum Institute and was its president in 1926.

Farish, with others, founded Humble Oil in March 1917; it was eventually absorbed by Standard Oil/Exxon. In 1933 he became chairman of the board of Standard's New Jersey division, and in 1937 became Standard's general president.

Sometime in the 1930s, Standard Oil and IG Farben had come to an agreement that Standard would not compete in rubber in Germany whilst IG Farben would neglect oil in the United States. Certain valuable patents, such as that for making a gasoline or kerosene equivalent from coal, were shared. This arrangement became something of a legal and public-relations problem when Standard and Farben found themselves on opposite sides of World War II shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In February 1942, Ass't Att'y Gen'l Thurman Arnold, Navy Sec'y Franklin Knox, and Army Sec'y Henry Stimson confronted Farish with the charge that, by continuing to favor Hitler in rubber deal and patent arrangements, Standard Oil had acted against US interests. They suggested a M$1.5 fine, which Farish rejected out of hand, essentially promising to turn off the US' oil supply. Arnold, Stimson, and Knox soon realized they had no power to compare with that of Standard and settled for a no contest plea, which avoided a public trial, and a trivial fine of a few grand. Farish paid $1000, a quarter of one week's salary.

But the gov't wasn't finished yet. Arnold and Interior Sec'y Harold Ickes convinced Harry Truman to bring SO before his Senate Special Committee Investigating the National Defense Program. Truman relished rousting out these traitors

SO executive. Sold oil and patents to the Luftwaffe during WW2 while his son of the same name was in the US Air Force. Exposure of the scandal probably left the grandson of the same name with the family fortune prematurely.

It is claimed the Auschwitz concentration camp was established as forced labour for the Standard-Farben plant nearby. If so, that would make Farish somewhat complicit in those crimes

As I remember it Rockefeller kept buying railroad oil
tanker cars and used thugs to vandalize oil wells and
refineries until owners sold out, until Rockefeller had
a horizontal and vertical monopoly on production
and distribution of petroleum products--tanker cars,
some railroad spurs, refineries, gas stations. I think
Harriman owned railroads and cut a deal.
