Daschle Backs Probing Bush Misstatements On IraqCopyright C 2004, Dow Jones Newswires WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The Senate's top Democrat on Friday backed the idea of having Congress examine whether the Bush administration deceived the nation before launching the Iraq war. "I think it's very important for Congress and the American people to have all the facts regarding the decision making leading to the decisions we've made with regard to going to Iraq," Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., said at a press briefing. "We now know that some of the information provided to us was faulty," Daschle said. He was responding to a question about whether he backed a proposal for a Congressional investigation into the administration's statements about Iraq, such as the country possessing weapons of mass destruction. "We don't know if that was just a misuse of intelligence, or just lack of adequate intelligence to begin with," he said. "But clearly these facts should be known, and I think the more information the American people know, the better our country will be." Daschle and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., briefed reporters about Democrats' priorities for 2004 and offered a critique of Bush's record ahead of his scheduled State of the Union speech Tuesday evening. It was in last year's speech that Bush made controversial allegations about Iraq's weapons programs, particularly allegations that Iraq sought to purchase uranium in Africa to fashion a nuclear weapon. The White House later said that information shouldn't have been in Bush's speech. The Bush administration has also been criticized for using fragmentary information alleging Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network. Pelosi, building on themes voiced by Democratic presidential contenders, portrayed the Bush administration's agenda as favoring a handful of wealthy backers and large corporations at the expense of working families. "The Bush administration provided no-bid contracts in Iraq for politically-connected corporations such as Halliburton, but did not plan for all our soldiers to have life-saving body armor to survive Iraqi guerilla attacks," she said. Daschle said Democrats in 2004 will pursue better funding for education, seek to create one million jobs, and improve the availability of health care. He denounced an administration plan to promote retirement savings through "retirement savings accounts" and "lifetime savings accounts" as "new tax shelters to make it easier for the wealthiest Americans to accumulate wealth." Democrats, by contrast, "want to crack down on mutual fund abusers and clean up the corporate scandals which have cheated ordinary people out of their retirement savings," he said. -By Rob Wells, Dow Jones Newswires; 202-862-9272; [EMAIL PROTECTED] (END) Dow Jones Newswires January 16, 2004 16:10 ET (21:10 GMT) -__ ___ _ ___ __ ___ _ _ _ __ /-_|-0-\-V-/-\|-|-__|-|-|-/-_| \_-\--_/\-/|-\\-|-_||-V-V-\_-\ |__/_|--//-|_|\_|___|\_A_/|__/ SPY NEWS is OSINT newsletter and discussion list associated to Mario's Cyberspace Station - The Global Intelligence News Portal http://mprofaca.cro.net ######## CAUTION! ######### Since you are receiving and reading documents, news stories, comments and opinions not only from so called (or self-proclaimed) "reliable sources", but also a lot of possible misinformation collected by Spy News moderator and subscribers and posted to Spy News for OSINT purposes - it should be a serious reason (particularly to journalists and web publishers) to think twice before using it for their story writing, further publishing or forwarding throughout Cyberspace.
