More Than 1,300 Priests Accused of Abuse Since 1950 By Rachel Zoll AP 2/10/04 "The scope of sex abuse accusations against Roman Catholic clergy since 1950 appears to be much greater than previously estimated by victims' groups and the media, an Associated Press review of reports from dioceses has found. The U.S. church will make an unprecedented, nationwide accounting of abuse claims and costs later this month, and some bishops already have started releasing local figures. The AP contacted dioceses across the country and found that 1,341 clergy members have been accused of molesting minors, with more than half the dioceses yet to report." http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAUS6JCIQD.html

Ottawa to appeal residential school ruling - Canadian Press 2/6/04 Ottawa "The federal government will appeal to the Supreme Court to overturn a B.C. judgment that put Ottawa solely on the hook for hefty native residential school settlements in the province, sources say." "More than 12,000 plaintiffs are now suing for compensation. Ottawa has announced a $1.7-billion plan to speed out-of-court settlements, of which it will pay 70 per cent for proven physical or sexual abuse. At current rates, it's estimated residential school claims would drag on in court for 50 years and run up legal bills of at least $2 billion â not including settlements. Ottawa also faces a class-action lawsuit that, if certified, seeks up to $12-billion in damages for all forms of abuse, including loss of native languages and culture." http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20040206.wschoo6/BNPrint/National/
fwd from L Moss Sharman A Mother's Ordeal Forces Britain to Review Crib Deaths by Lizette Alvarez 2/8/04 Salisbury, England "Angela Cannings spent 20 months in prison, convicted of smothering two of her babies, before an appeals court declared it was all a grave mistake - the murder charges, her trial, her conviction and her life sentence." "Ms. Cannings's case has called into question the testimony of Sir Roy Meadow, a prominent pediatrician who was the first to suggest in 1977 that some mothers induce illness in their children to draw attention to themselves." ""Sir Roy, as a witness for the prosecution, told the jury, "The diagnosis for me, the clinical diagnosis, would be this was characteristic of smothering." But he had never seen the babies or interviewed the parents and, as the appellate court pointed out, there was a dearth of evidence: no cause of death could be determined; there was no sign the babies had been injured; and there was no history of parental violence or abuse. In fact, relatives and friends described Mrs. Cannings as a loving mother." http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/08/international/europe/08BRIT.html?pagewanted=print&position=
Study: 1 in 8 Iowa women a rape victim By Jason Kristufek, 2/4/04 "A report released Tuesday estimates that one in eight Iowa women is raped sometime during her life. But a victims' advocate in Story County says the actual number is likely higher. That is because the study by the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault does not take into account children, alcohol- or drug-facilitated rape, statuary rape or sexual assaults that occur in domestic violence situations....The study also found that one out of six sexual assaults is reported to law enforcement. "And then you figure that the number of cases we actually prosecute is much lower than the number that is reported," Vincent said.....They estimate that 145,000 Iowa women, or 12.7 percent, have been raped, which is slightly lower than the national average of 13.4 percent." http://www.amestrib.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=10916509

ÂÂÂÂÂDES MOINES, Iowa - In what may be the first subpoena of its kind in decades, a federal judge has ordered a university to turn over records about a gathering of anti-war activists. ÂÂÂÂÂIn addition to the subpoena of Drake University, subpoenas were served this past week on four of the activists who attended a Nov. 15 forum at the school, ordering them to appear before a grand jury Tuesday, the protesters said. ÂÂÂÂÂFederal prosecutors refuse to comment on the subpoenas.
ÂÂÂÂÂIn addition to records about who attended the forum, the subpoena orders the university to divulge all records relating to the local chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, a New York-based legal activist organization that sponsored the forum.
ÂÂÂÂÂThe group, once targeted for alleged ties to communism in the 1950s, announced Friday it will ask a federal court to quash the subpoena on Monday.

White House Releases Bush Military Records
By TERENCE HUNT, AP
WASHINGTON (Feb. 10) - The White House, facing election-year questions about President Bush's military service, released pay records and other information Tuesday that it said supports Bush's assertion that he fulfilled his duty as a member of the Air National Guard during the Vietnam war.
....
The material included annual retirement point summaries and pay records that the White House said show that Bush served.
''When you serve, you are paid for that service. These documents outline the days on which he was paid. That means he served. And these documents also show he met his requirements,'' press secretary Scott McClellan told reporters. ''And it's just really a shame that people are continuing to bring this up.'' ''These documents clearly show that the president fulfilled his duties,'' McClellan said.
The documents indicate Bush received pay for six days of duty between May and December of 1972 when he was supposed to be on temporary duty in Alabama. There is a five-month stretch in 1972 when he was not paid for service. The records do not indicate what duty Bush performed or where he was.
The White House also has not been able to produce fellow guardsmen who could testify that Bush attended guard meetings and drills. ''Obviously we would have made people available'' if they had been found, McClellan said.
