SPAIN TERROR NIGHTMARE: DREDGING UP THE SHADOW OF AL QAEDA

In the aftermath of Spainâs worst terror attack ever, in which multiple commuter trains were targeted at morning rush hour, killing 200 and wounding 1400, Spanish authorities are still trying to find clues as to who is responsible. Spanish authorities always look first to the ETA, Spainâs long-time Basque province separatist movement, as the likely culprit of such atrocities; the ETA has a reputation for using terror to accomplish what they cannot do by democratic means. Even though Spain has succeeded in severely restricting ETA operations during the term of outgoing president Jose Maria Aznar, these Marxist terrorists are far from eliminated.

The world press, however, was quick to jump on the al Qaeda boogie man after too-good-to-be-true evidence surfaced pointing to Muslim terrorists. As the Economist reported, "a stolen van was found in a town near Madrid, where one of the bombed trains had started its journey, containing detonators and a tape of verses from the Koran. And a London-based Arab newspaper said it had received an e-mail, purportedly from a group allied to al-Qaeda, claiming responsibility for the bombs. Announcing the discovery of the van, the Spanish government said that ETA remained the chief suspect, though it had told the security forces not to rule out any lines of investigation."

The Economist happens to be the predictable London source that always funnels al Qaeda claims to the media. It is all too convenient. The entire al Qaeda scenario lacks credibility because, while the US claims it is the largest and broadest based terror organization in the world, al Qaeda has yet to pull off one normal small terror event in the US, after 9/11. If al Qaeda really was responsible for 9/11 (and not simply fronting for much larger, sophisticated government forces), then why canât they cause even a single car bomb in the US with all its open borders?

The Spanish authorities are correct to keep looking to the ETA. The al Qaeda connection is as suspicious as the evidence the FBI claimed to find in the aftermath of 9/11. Why do terrorists capable of pulling off a series of simultaneous train explosion seem to be too stupid to remove evidence from a stolen van? Why leave behind good detonators? As in 9/11, are we really to believe that these carousing, bar hopping Islamic terrorists are so steeped in religion that they must listen to Koran tapes as they drive to do their dirty deed? I find this presumption ludicrous.

In fact, Spanish authorities have recent evidence of the ETA trying to blow up trains. Again, from the Economist, "The timing of the attacks came as no great surprise to Spainâs security forces, who only two weeks ago had seized a huge load of explosives destined for Madrid. Last December, Spanish police said they had foiled an ETA plot to blow up a train in a Madrid station. And in the summer, police arrested an ETA cell that had planted explosives on a railway track outside Madrid." ETA disclaims any responsibility. Why shouldnât they take advantage of the establishment penchant for bringing up the specter of al Qaeda? Theyâd be dumb not to.
