--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- "They will slyly say, like in Vietnam, that America lost because...A pretend war is being waged... A war that could be won if it were led by a courageous leader...make war like a true warrior, that is; if you go to war, go to win a all cost"I don't think it's too sly to advocate escalating the military side while ignoring the political side. You could escalate infinitely and still lose by definition and default. Standard Vietnam sour grapes says that politics can always be dominated by police-military action. This is usually implied by speaking as if there is only a military side to a war, for instance as implied by "A war that could be won if it were led by a courageous leader", which simply excludes the notion of political and cultural dimensions. Language including "democracy" and "liberation" would seem to imply that the invader is aware that war always has a political side, but that may be just propaganda covering an arbitrary, military occupational effort ignorant as far as political and cultural dimensions. What good would "a courageous" but still ignorant leader be? Any real student of Vietnam knows that a military war with no political side is a no-win, and I do not mean a fake, arbitrary, psyop charade of a winning-hearts-and-minds political effort. If it runs rough-shod over natural leaders, it is not really political, it is police-military coup. Suppressing Dr. Ton Hoan and shutting down a free press in South Vietnam would be examples. Relocating montagnard families into hot LZ's would be another example of Orwellian "winning the hearts and minds" by unenlightened heavy-handed police-military junta seeded with band-aids and candy, bread and circuses, uniforms and parades. In Iraq US soldiers have been photographed tearing down posters. You can't do enough of that to win. You can't kick down enough doors to win. You can't pile up enough bodies to win. Winning would be ultimately political, cultural, economic, yet Gary Revel claims a change in military leadership could win. This is standard Vietnam rightwing revisionist tunnel vision-- "make war like a true warrior, that is; if you go to war, go to win at all cost" Militarily the war was won a year ago. How does the author propose to "win" an occupation by purely military means,"like a true warrior"? Phoenix program, "kill them all, let God sort them out"? That would be classic Vietnam-style no-win strategy, "ignoring the political side". -Bob --- Tom Mooney <frfrnthlthgahoo.com> wrote: > Heroin, Vietnam and the War in Iraq News Release > > Former special investigator Gary Revel relates > Vietnam, Heroin and the War in Iraq.
