On August 3rd 1852 Harvard and Yale competed in the very first intercollegiate sporting event in America. This was the birth of college competition in the United States. This significant and historical rowing event took place on New Hampshires Lake Winnipesaukee. The Harvard crew won the historical race and to present the prize ( a pair of black walnut oars silver enscribed) was the then candidate and future President of the United States, General Franklin Pierce. On one oar the silver inscription reads: 1st Prize Lake Winipiseogee August 3rd,,1852 . And on the other oar the silver inscription reads: Won at the Regatta between Harvard and Yale by the Harvard Club, Oneida Class of "53. The sale of these significant oars are a historical and rare opportunity .
