23-4-2004 - Would PIERCE BUSH Be DRAFTED? 11:46 AM GMT
Odd how little things can lead to something big. Yesterday while searching for a name, I wound up on CNN which provided a transcript of "Larry King Live" from the last Republican National Convention. That's where I discovered Pierce, Neil's son and Georgie's nephew. His presence and political savvy didn't go unnoticed and King included him in the show.
He's been groomed for politics Kennedy-style since birth and daddy Neil, proudly boasted to the KyPost:
"Outside of school, Pierce Bush has a ravenous appetite for the family business of politics, his father said.
Partly to emphasize the disconnect between performance evaluations and ability, Neil Bush made a prediction that might seem far-fetched in other families: ''I'll give you a little exclusive. Pierce Bush will be president some day if he graduates high school,'' he told The Post."
Wow! That's quite a boast, and it's dead-on serious. He was 16 at the time, thus making him by now, draft material.
After reading several blog entries, seeing that what I've been writing about since 2002, 8 articles in all, about the draft, I was jazzed the chatter has revved up. This is from November of this year, in which I lamented in a piece called, "Dodging Draft Reinstatement Talk" which said:
"I don't get it, there's more talk about the draft now than when I wrote about it last November and again in July, yet the public is very quiet about it. Where's the outrage, where's the debate amongst you the people?? When I saw its ugly head rear again I was positive I'd find a lot to quote today. I've been looking for hours now, and haven't found anything, just news items and old stuff which was mentioned in the past reports, which are still pertinent today."
It was just days after I wrote the last report about the draft, the 14th of this month, that Republican Senator Chuck Hagel stated it should be revived and that's what set everyone off. After reading until my eyes are burning, I believe this was blown out of proportion and his words aren't being taken seriously by his peers in office -- at least not publicly. He's a Republican. This has been a Democrat thing. The San Francisco Gate reported:
"Sen. Chuck Hagel, a Vietnam War veteran and influential member of the Foreign Relations Committee, wants the United States to consider reviving the draft as part of a broader effort to ensure that all Americans "bear some responsibility ... pay some price" in defending the nation's interests."
It was one part of his statement that I zeroed in on, the reason for the topic of this report:
"His main interest, he said, is to ensure that some kind of mandatory national service is considered so "the privileged, the rich," as well as the less affluent, bear the burden of fighting wars of the future."
George Paine reported on WarBlogging on the 21st of this month about Hagel's statement and was passionate in his outrage, saying in one part, "I for one would not go, and I would encourage all others not to go. It is one thing to send volunteers to fight and die for a lie. It is quite another to send conscripts to fight and die for a lie.
We must all send a message, and send it now. The draft is unacceptable. Involuntary conscription is unacceptable. If the White House cannot find enough voluntary cannon fodder for Iraq then plainly it should withdraw from Iraq. The solution to a lack of soldiers is not to be found in press gangs, it is to be found in withdrawal."
One commentor said in essence no effing way his son would be drafted and went on to say: "They have already taken major steps to close loopholes and places to escape to, although I will bet all of my worldy possessions that some form of loophole will be created for the draft age kids of defense contractors, the very wealthy, and politicians. We will never fight FOR these greedy fuckers, but we will be more than happy to fight against them though; I can't think of a better cause."
Another said, "Hagel speaks as if a draft would equally affect affluent, well-connected families. Does anyone actually believe this?
Are there any children of Congressmen and Congresswomen, Senators, judges, or other government officials, on the front lines of Iraq? Were there any in Afghanistan?"
And another: "Whether or not a fair draft would have your desired effect is purely hypothetical, there's no basis in US history to support your case. Every war the US has fought has allowed exemptions for the educated and moneyed ."
I'm not sure what to think about an article yesterday from Yahoo, "Rumsfeld Sees No Need for Military Draft."
"I don't know anyone in the executive branch of the government who believes it would be appropriate or necessary to reinstitute the draft," Rumsfeld told the Newspaper Association of America's annual convention
Rumsfeld did not address the issue of burden-sharing, except to say the old system of conscription had "a lot of difficulties," including loopholes that permitted many to avoid being drafted."
Smokescreen? The Bush administration has been adamant in its claims that a draft isn't necessary, yet it appears very likely in 2005. This political mafia is waiting for the elections to take any action and sheesh, from the way they talk, it's in the bag. I've also read Kerry supports a manatory draft. Wow, two evils, how does anyone choose? This cached page may disappear but yep, he says *mandatory*
I found this on e-thepeople who reported, "RUSSO BLASTS GOP CALL FOR MILITARY DRAFT." I had no idea who he was, I never read his name in any of the election coverage and didn't know there was a Libertarian candidate, but from what I've read about him, wow. Check this out.
"This isn't speculative," Russo says. "The draft is coming. Republicans and Democrats have been trying to put off the public discussion until after the November elections, but there's no doubt that the American people will be threatened with conscription by the end of this year."
There were a lot of things mentioned. This article was about the recent draft-talk revival due to Hagel's blatherings. There were some choice comments relating to the rich and privileged and the draft, the focus of this piece.
"How in the world a government that can't control it's borders believes it has the moral authority to impose military service. Kerry and the "progressives" have of course as has been noted pushing for some form of "national service" program as they see that as a necessary tool for further indoctrination of youth. Bush and the Zionist Neo-Cons talk out of both corners of their mouths and of course the poverty pimps like Rangel want to insure that more of the "Non-African Americans" get pressed into service and offered up in the foreign adventures and escapades of the rich elites that are behind the two parties. Of course, the children of the rich elites will have options out. It's a laughable situation until of course...........it actually happens. Then what? If drafted, how many would actually report? I've talked to a couple of youths who've indicated they'd just as soon do the jail time."
Steering now to TalkLeft who is keeping this subject alive, even reprinting a January article today. I'm referring to an article from yesterday, "The Drafty Spring Air". I was pleased to read this as it backs up what I'm saying about the rich and the Bush's.
"The draft is the only remaining option. Bush will start implementing a draft through reactivation of the Selective Service Boards, shortly after he is sworn in for a second term, if that nightmare scenario of his election should come to pass. But not to worry for the offspring of the Bush dynasty. The Bush loyalists will find a way to keep the twins and other Bush kin from serving. None of the Bush brothers, including George, have fought in a war. They don't plan on starting any new Bush traditions now with the "next generation."
It's our sons and daughters who will be drafted not the kin of the Bush family. You can be sure of that."
I don't need to keep providing examples of this, there are too many to cite. One thing for sure, Pierce Bush will not be drafted and let's hope he won't live up to his dad's expectations and be another Bush in the White House. Two were bad enough.
Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "Hail To The Chief",
oh, they point the cannon at you, Lord,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no senator's son,
It ain't me, it ain't me,
I ain't no fortunate one, no,
