--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/4769380.html Last update: May 11, 2004 at 6:18 AM Bush won't disrupt daughters' graduation ceremonies Elisabeth Bumiller, New York Times May 11, 2004PREZ0511WASHINGTON, D.C. -- President Bush will be going to three college commencements in coming weeks -- but not those of his twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna. Bush and his wife, Laura, said they did not want to subject other families to the disruptions of a presidential visit when Barbara Bush graduates from Yale University on May 24 in New Haven, Conn., and Jenna Bush graduates from the University of Texas on May 22 in Austin. Bush turned down an invitation to speak at the University of Texas commencement ceremony. But he will give a commencement address at the Air Force Academy in Colorado, at Louisiana State University, and at Concordia University in Mequon, Wis. Concordia is a liberal-arts college run by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The First Lady's press secretary, Gordon Johndroe, said Monday that she and the president would mark their daughters' commencements in a different way. "The family will celebrate the girls' graduations, and when we get closer to the date we'll be able to release more information," he said. Officially, Yale had no comment on the plans of the president, a 1968 graduate of Yale who received an honorary degree from the school in 2001, when he delivered a short commencement address. But faculty members, noting that protesters had interrupted Bush then, said that he probably would have faced demonstrations on the largely liberal campus because of the war in Iraq. "Protests would surely have been inevitable," said Robert W. Gordon, a law school professor and Bush critic. "The administration is not terrifically well regarded on this campus by most people, and the management of the war in Iraq is causing enormous concern." A spokesman for the University of Texas said school officials also had expected protests. "It was something we would have anticipated and obviously prepared for," said Don Hale, the university's vice president for public affairs. The commencement speaker at the University of Texas will be Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, a close Bush friend and former chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas System. Yale usually doesn't have a major commencement address, but the speaker for Class Day, held a day before, will be documentary filmmaker Ken Burns. ------------------------ Yahoo!
