--- Begin Message --- -Caveat Lector-      One path by which not only literal Hegelian but also Neoplatonic influences, "spiritualist" in nature, entered New England society in the early 1800s: ALCOTT [family tree at http://www.genealogy.com/famousfolks/louisaa/index.htm#toc and http://cybrary.uwinnipeg.ca/people/Dobson/genealogy/famous/Quincy.html -- related to John Hancock, but otherwise ringing no bells] and EMERSON (a member of the extended S&B family by marrying into the Forbes/Perkins line -- see chart below), leaders of the "New England Transcendentalist" movement of the 1830s, politically interwoven with Fourier-socialist "Utopian" organizational schemes (e.g., Robert Owens) as well as the Abolitionist movement before the Civil War.

Reading a quote of Alcott's metaphysic (below) is redolent of Hegel-qua-Plato:
http://www.alcott.net/alcott/home/champions/Alcott.html?index=1

(1) Alcott devised a "transcendentalist" educational process, based on the teachings of Swiss Idealist Pestalozzi, which soon aroused the interest of [Scotland-born] educator William Russell (1798-1873) in Boston.  Plans for the school were kept at the Masonic Lodge in 1834.  When put into practice, however, popular support was lacking and the school failed.  In 1837, the idea was brought to London, to the attention of J. Pierrepont Greaves* (can't link him to the British wing of the "Pierpont" family) and created a stir.

*"James Pierrepont Greaves, born 1 February 1777 and one of the oldest of the Transcendentalists, was an English mystic, educator, and reformer whose ideas were influenced by Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi***, Jakob BÃhme, and Amos Bronson Alcott.  Formerly a wealthy merchant in the city of London, deprived of his property by French spoliations in Napoleon's time. Quitting business, he travelled and resided for some time in Germany.  In 1817 Greaves joined Pestalozzi for four years at his experimental school in Yverdun and in 1825 founded the London Infant School Society.  His book Letters of Pestalozzi on the Education of Infancy (1830) promoted Pestalozzian theories and practices and influenced Alcott's own educational philosophy.  In 1838 Greaves, along with English reformers William Oldham, Henry Gardner Wright, and Charles Lane, established Alcott House in Ham County, Surrey, a school modeled directly on Alcott's Temple School in Boston.  Like Alcott, these men sought to instill self-culture and God-like spirituality in their young pupils and, as part of their larger reform efforts, supported vegetarianism, water drinking, celibacy, and hydrotherapy."

***"Pestalozzi, Johann Heinrich, 1746â1827, Swiss educational reformer, b. ZÃrich. His theories [derived from JJ Rousseau] laid the foundation of modern elementary education. He studied theology at the Univ. of ZÃrich but was forced to abandon his career because of his political activity on behalf of the Helvetic Society, a reformist Swiss political organization [see, for example, www.linth-escher.ch/eng/escher.htm
]. From 1769 to 1798 he lived at his farm 'Neuhof' near ZÃrich, where he conducted a school for poor children. He then directed a school at Burgdorf (1799â1804), and from 1805 until his retirement (1825) to 'Neuhofâ'he was director of the experimental institute at Yverdon-les-Bains, which was established on Pestalozzian principles. Pestalozziâs theory of education is based on the importance of a pedagogical method that corresponds to the natural order of individual development. To Pestalozzi the individuality of each child is something that has to be cultivated actively through education. He opposed the prevailing system of memorization learning and strict discipline. Running through much of Pestalozziâs writing is the idea that education should be moral as well as intellectual. Never losing his commitment to social reform, Pestalozzi often reiterated the belief that society could be changed by education."
