Parvanov also demanded that the 485-member Bulgarian battalion be relocated to a new camp outside Karbala by June 30, the deadline for transfer of power to the Iraqi people. Karbala has been the scene of recent heavy fighting between coalition forces and the armed followers of Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. "The country's battalion has been involved in a real war, which it was not prepared for," he said. On Sunday, Parvanov made an unannounced one-day visit to Iraq in an attempt to boost the morale of Bulgarian troops following the killing of a sixth Bulgarian soldier in a skirmish with insurgents and the evacuation of eight soldiers suffering from combat stress. During the visit, insurgents fired at Parvanov's motorcade as it travelled near Karbala. The president's security detail fired back, the attackers fled and no one in the motorcade was hurt. "The political will for our presence in Iraq has already been declared, but its continuation is conditional on the guarantees for our battalion's security," Parvanov said at a news conference Tuesday in Sofia. The present base of Bulgaria's forces Camp Kilo is a frequent target of insurgents' fire. The country also lost five soldiers in a suicide attack against its previous base, Camp India, in December. Parvanov called for United Nations and NATO engagement in Iraq, but stressed that Bulgaria's military presence did not depend on the involvement of those organizations. Bulgaria might also consider increasing the number of troops in Iraq if the UN passed a resolution supporting a peacekeeping mission there, he added. Parvanov is expected to visit Poland on April 28-29 for the European Economic Summit and to discuss the mission in Iraq with Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski.
