-Caveat Lector- The US is building a big airbase to obviate the need for the
Pashtun Smuggler Zone or northwest frontier provinces of
Pakistan.

In other news, the Averell Harriman Dopeway in Laos and
Cambodia is still worth protecting, in case the airbase has
to be abandoned in favor of lone crazed off the map plausibly
deniable simple old school methods that can always be kept
off the map("neutral, tribal semi-autonomous zone, holy, etc")
by claiming to  curry favor with Pak fundies.

Pakistan: U.S. troops enter Pakistani tribal region from
Afghanistan in search of terrorists
SADAQAT JAN, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, May 5, 2004

(05-05) 07:37 PDT ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) --

U.S. soldiers strayed into Pakistani territory while hunting al-Qaida and Taliban
suspects in southeastern Afghanistan but returned across the border after Pakistani
troops told them where they were, a military official said Wednesday.

American soldiers in at least three military vehicles entered Pakistan's Lowara Mandi
town in the North Waziristan tribal region Sunday evening, said Pakistan army
spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan. The U.S. troops came 200-300 yards inside
Pakistan across a rugged, mountainous border that is not clearly marked, he said.

Such incidents are highly sensitive. President Gen. Pervez Musharraf is a staunch U.S.
ally but has steadfastly refused to allow American soldiers to operate on his territory,
fearing a backlash from religious conservatives.

In March, Pakistani security forces carried out a massive operation against militants in
the tribal region, that left more than 120 people dead, including soldiers, terror suspects
and civilians. But

...no senior al-Qaida or Taliban figures were netted.

Some 163 [street-level flunkies] people were arrested

...but most have since been released. [at least not killed for appearances!]
