Two American soldiers were treated for exposure to the killer gas - a single drop of which can cause quick, agonising choking death - after a 155 millimetre artillery round containing sarin exploded near a US military convoy in the Iraqi capital. A spokesman for British forces in Basra said troops had not been regularly carrying their nuclear, chemical and biological (NBC) warfare suits and respirators because the threat of a chemical attack was not thought to be serious enough since the fall of Saddam Hussein's Baathist regime. "We have our kit available should it be needed," he said. "With regard to carrying it out on patrol, I think they do not because it is not deemed there is sufficient risk there." The MoD insisted all British troops did have access to at least one NBC suit each and that the equipment was "to hand" in the event of a chemical attack. A spokesman said it was up to local commanders on the ground to decide whether they needed to carry the suits and respirators at all times while out on patrol, depending on their assessment of the threat level. This could re reassessed in light of today's explosion, he confirmed. However, he said he was not aware that, as yet, the threat to British troops had been judged to have increased. "If it is deemed to be necessary to raise the threat levels then that is what happens and appropriate measures are taken," the spokesman said. "What equipment they (the troops) carry is a matter for the commander in the field." Only two months ago a committee of MPs warned that problems with the supply of protective equipment meant British troops would have suffered "severe" consequences if Saddam Hussein had unleashed chemical weapons against them. In a major report on the Iraq war, the Commons Defence Committee said "serious shortcomings" in the supply and distribution of vital protective equipment would have left troops vulnerable to a chemical attack. The committee highlighted a series of critical failings in the military supply chain which meant that vital kit - including ammunition, machine guns, body armour and desert clothing - did not reach the troops in time. ------------------------ Yahoo!
