Two weeks ago we inaugurated this new weekly feature as part of the MRC's "Tell the Truth 2004" project. The "awards" for last week's lowlights: > Teddy Flips Out, Matt Wimps Out. On May 10, John Kerry's patron, and fellow liberal Senator from Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy, attacked the integrity of the United States from the floor of the U.S. Senate: "We now learn that Saddam's torture chambers reopened under new management -- U.S. management." But when Kennedy showed up for an interview on NBC's Today show just three days later, co-host Matt Lauer chose to ignore the Senator's indefensible screed. Instead, he invited Teddy to continue his attacks: "Do you feel that we risk blurring the line between ourselves and the people we're supposed to be protecting U.S. citizens from?" One wonders what Senator Kennedy would have to say about America to get Lauer's attention. On the May 14 World News Tonight, Peter Jennings found it newsworthy that the communist dictator of Cuba had rounded up a couple hundred thousand of his subjects and forced them into a giant propaganda event. "There was an enormous anti-American demonstration in Cuba today," Jennings intoned, as if the staged rally was a genuine reflection of the sentiments of free people. Jennings also found news in the dictator's rant "that President Bush was trying to impose what he, Mr. Castro, called world tyranny.'" To their credit, the CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News chose to ignore the dictator's manipulative anti-American show.
