The most powerful and controversial American priest ever to work in the Vatican now plays golf and celebrates Mass in the Phoenix Diocese.
Paul Casimir Marcinkus, a 6-foot-4 native of Cicero, Ill., was a personal bodyguard to Pope Paul VI and earned the nickname "Gorilla" by the Italian media for his fierceness in stepping in when a Bolivian artist tried to stab the pope at the Manila airport in the Philippines in 1970.
At one point in his career, Marcinkus, the son of a Lithuanian window cleaner, was governor of Vatican City. But his real power came as head of the Vatican Bank, where, from 1971 to '89, he reigned supreme over church finances and seemed to concentrate as much on the fiscal world as spiritual.
"You can't run a church on Hail Marys," he often said.
Marcinkus was indicted in Italy in 1982 as an accessory in the $3.5 billion collapse of Banco Ambrosiano, an Italian financial institution with close ties to the Vatican Bank. He never was arrested, however, because Italian courts ruled Vatican employees are immune from prosecution.
The Banco Ambrosiano scandal made international headlines when two of the bank's top officers, including high-profile Chairman Roberto Calvi, were murdered.
Calvi, known as "God's Banker" because of his strong ties to the Vatican, was hanged in ritualistic fashion beneath Blackfriars' Bridge in London.
A colleague, Michelle Sindona, one of Marcinkus' closest friends, died in jail after drinking a cup of coffee laced with cyanide. Marcinkus never was implicated in either death.
A 1984 book, In God's Name, by British investigator David A. Yallop, attempted to tie Marcinkus to a suspected plot to kill Paul VI's successor, John Paul I.
John Paul, the so-called Smiling Pope, died just 33 days after his election in 1978. His body was embalmed before doctors were allowed to examine it.
Yallop's book received international attention, but his theories were rebutted in a 1989 book by John Cornwell, brother of best-selling British spy novelist John Le Carre.
Cornwell convinced Vatican officials to grant him special access to research his book, A Thief in the Night, which concluded that John Paul I died of natural causes. The mysterious circumstances were merely the result of ineptness and political infighting about how to handle the unexpected death, Cornwell wrote.
Marcinkus, as he has repeatedly for years, politely refused to be interviewed when The Republic attempted to talk to him after a recent Saturday Mass at St. Clement of Rome Church in Sun City. But he long ago denied involvement in John Paul's death.
"A lot of times I've said I'd like to strangle a guy, but that's when you've lost patience with him or something like that, a figure of speech," he once told a British journalist. "I've been accused of murdering a pope and then getting involved in Ambrosiano.
"Both of these things are completely unfounded. If I have any inner strength, if I believe in myself, I say to myself, 'This might be God's way of ensuring that I get my toe in the door of paradise.' If I get my toe in, he can't slam the door."
Marcinkus is also at the center of another controversy involving the Vatican and millions in Nazi gold that was laundered from Germany after World War II. A U.S. State Department report implicated the Vatican in the money-laundering scheme, and investigators have tried unsuccessfully, because of his diplomatic immunity, to question Marcinkus about any possible Vatican Bank involvement.
Now 81, Marcinkus lives in a modest, $120,000 seven-room home he bought on a golf course in Sun City in September 1997.Archbishop Marcinkus: Papal Tough & Mafia Banker Doing Fine
