(Conspiracy Nation, 6/7/04) -- A stupendous week lies ahead. Signs and portents abound. From high atop Mount Olympus, the gods look down with favor upon tthe pagan ceremonies about to unfold.
Jupiter (Zeus) had stopped his contrariety on May 4th. The Memorial Rapture [1] beamed-up The Righteous for communion with the gods. The miraculous D-Day/Reagan death near-conjunction occurs almost concurrently with a rare Venus (Aphrodite) Sun (Apollo) alignment. Surely the Roman pantheon now smiles down upon this land!A week-long Roman Holy Week has spectacularly arrived. The apotheosized god Washington stands ready to embrace the soon-to-be-deified Reagan. Solemn celebrations throughout the land will characterise the gloomy joyfulness of this time.
A Roman Holiday has been declared! The Washington civil servants await the culmination
of this Roman Reagan Holy Week: Friday, June 11th, to be a holiday (holy day) for them.
To honor the auspicious ceremonies, a lamb shall be slaughtered and its entrails examined. A riderless horse together with horses pulling a hearse may be utilized. Roman Legion honor guards will add to the pomp. High Roman officials past and present will gather together from the far-flung regions of the empire. Humble offerings shall be made.In the spirit of the ceremonials, Conspiracy Nation has prepared a background to a possible guide book to the event.
Universal Worship Of The Dead
"Closely connected with the universal worship of the dead in the history of all primitive peoples was the consecration as deities of heroes or rulers, as a reward for bravery or other great services." All ancient cities worshipped their founder. "In Rome the way for the deification of the emperors was prepared by many historic causes, such as the cult of the manes or the souls of departed friends and ancestors, the worship of the legendary kings of Latium, the Di Indigetes, the myth that Romulus had been transported to heaven..." [2]
"In the earliest times Romulus is said to have been admitted to divine honours under the name of Quirinus (Plut. Rom. 27, 28; Liv.i.16; Cic. deRep. ii.10); but none of the other Roman kings appears to have received this honour, and in the republican times we also read of no instance of an apotheosis." [3] It was not until Rome changed from a republic into an empire that routine deification of departed Caesars grew common.
"While the cultured classes regarded the deification of members of the imperial family and court favorites with boldly expressed scorn, emperor-worship, which was in reality political rather than personal, was a powerful element of unity in the empire, as it afforded the pagans a common religion in which it was a patriotic duty to participate." [2]
A Common Religion For Pagans
In Washington, DC, otherwise known as Rome On The Potomac, there is a painting, "The Apotheosis of George Washington" by Constantino Brumidi. "Americans are everywhere given the message that they can look up to George Washington, but for those who walk through the Rotunda of the Capitol, the figurative becomes literal. Gazing upward to the dome, one sees Washington floating far overhead, a life-sized and heavenly vision." [4]
Others raised to the rank of federal godhood include Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson Memorial), Abraham Lincoln (Lincoln Memorial), and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (recently dedicated memorial in Washington, DC.) Minor federal deities include Theodore Roosevelt (carved into Mount Rushmore) and Martin Luther King (permanently deified by his ownership of a special federal day.)
In the case of Martin Luther King, the Roman tactic of subsuming and incorporating popular sentiment is especially raw. Here we have a man hounded and harassed by the State during his life, then turned into a federal icon by the very State which murdered him! In the words of Khalil Gibran, "...and Death walks grinning in the parade."
In "The Owl Of Minerva," Conspiracy Nation noticed philosopher Georg Hegel. Hegel "preached that the State was 'absolute reason' and 'freedom' for the citizen arrived only by worship of and obedience to the State."
"As Tom Valentine once noted perceptively during a broadcast of Radio Free America, it is like people thinking of the government as God. The government, of course, is not God." ("The Owl Of Minerva," www.shout.net/~bigred/Owl.htm) The government is not God, but fills for many an atheistic vacuum. The State knowingly promotes atheism so as to create a vacuum. But "nature abhors a vacuum." First the State creates a spiritual vacuum by undermining God. Then the State fills the vacuum with a pantheon of federal gods.
But the federal gods are mummified, bound tight in cloth, their true natures changed into icons. The radical Martin Luther King, so potent for change in his time, is reduced to a thing that keeps saying only, "I have a dream."
Statues of the federal gods are positioned inside Washington, DC, just as statues of the Roman gods were positioned in Rome. This amounts to an inverse anthropomorphising, in other words, idolatry. The Caesar is first apeothisized (deified), then statufied, iconisized, anthropomorphized, and idolized.
A Stupendous Irish Wake
What is now called a visitation used to be called a wake. Nowadays, it usually means going to the funeral home and taking a last look at the departed. But the reason why this used to be called a wake is derived from the idea of staying awake with the person who has just died. People used to die at home, not in hospitals. When this happened, family and close friends customarily stayed through the night, awake to be certain that death had actually occurred, that it was not instead just a semblance of death.
An Irish wake is a particular kind of wake, unusual to many. Go to a typical Irish wake and those there are likely to be laughing it up. Sure, they're sad about the departed, but they figure, "Why not have a good time?"
Ronald Reagan, of Irish heritage, reportedly began planning his own wake in 1981. He wanted it to be big-time, with lots of people. This unfolding Roman Reagan Holy Week is the grand-daddy of all Irish wakes. So laugh it up, have a good time, and celebrate the boon of an unexpected federal holy week. Just look out for the apotheosizing, mummifying, statufying, iconosizing, and idolizing.
