Here is a direct quote from Hitler's Minister of Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, describing Hitler's goals on taking power in the democratic Weimar Republic of Germany: "We enter parliament in order to supply ourselves, in the arsenal of democracy, with its own weapons.... Within the short period of only two tears, Hitler was able to seduce the civilized, cultured and learned German people into agreeing to make him the total dictator, Der Fuehrer, of the entire nation. How did he do it? Hitler established and maintained his popularity among the German people through a very sophisticated propaganda machine, operated by his close henchman, Joseph Goebbels. This "spin machine" knew exactly how to exploit the deepest fears, resentments and jealousies of the German people. Goebbels' propaganda machine blamed all of Germany's troubles on selected scapegoats ("the right-wing conspiracy") and promised the people an economic paradise ("It's the economy, stupid!"), while totally misleading the people about the real objectives of Hitler's foreign and domestic policies. Hitler strongly believed in the "Big Lie" technique: "The great mass of people...will more easily fall victim to a big lie than to a small one." Adolph Hitler But Goebbels could not fool everyone. So, for those people who objected to what was happening in NAZI Germany, Hitler had a private army, the much-feared SS, under Heinrich Himmler, which engaged in state-sanctioned terror and assassination. People who might be a threat to the regime "committed suicide" or were shot in their homes. The news media were silent, either out of fear of retaliation or because they supported Hitler. Hitler promised to bring back the glory of Germany and the German people, and the people permitted him to become the iron-fisted ruler, Der Fuehrer, of NAZI Germany.
