Subject: [political-research] Another few East-European states "globalized" today

Globalization and its "benefits":

Another few East European states were swollen today by the huge American globalistic blender of lives.

1. After years of war, murdered, impoverished and helpless, the Serbian people must obey to the fate decided from the outside against its will.

The U.S. government said Serbs had "clearly chosen the path that will lead Serbia to the Euro-Atlantic integration

At the same time, the United States would "explore the new opportunities...to assist Serbia.

BELGRADE (Reuters) - The European Union, the United States and former enemy Croatia applauded Serbia on Monday for turning its back on hard-line nationalism to elect a pro-Western liberal president.

Kostunica has said cooperating with the Hague is not one of his priorities for Serbia. Tadic says such cooperation is a must even if many Serbs think it incurs the dishonor of handing over generals to what many believe is a biased court.

Lithuanians must obey to the same rules and share the same fate. The US has prepared for them another Saakashvili:

Adamkus again Lithuanian president

15:43 2004-06-28
77-year-old Valdas Adamkus has become Lithuanian president for a second time.

Valdas Adamkus was born on November 3, 1926 in Kaunas. In July 1944 emigrated to Germany with his parents, then lived in the U.S. In 1960 he graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology as an architectural engineer.

From the beginning of the 1980s he worked in the environmental protection agency, then was appointed the agency's administrator for the fifth U.S. region. He participated in the activity of the Lithuanian emigres. In 1998 was elected President of Lithuania and occupied this post till February 25, 2003.

Adamkus returned from the US to head Lithuania from 1998 to early 2003, putting it firmly on the road to EU and NATO membership.

Lithuanian leaders hailed the victory, saying it ensured continuity in the country, which became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991 and joined the European Union and NATO only weeks ago.

The Lithuanian people made a right decision, though I thought that Valdas Adamkus would get greater support," acting president Arturas Paulauskas said in an interview with public television from a NATO summit in Istanbul.

Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis, who served under Adamkus, said the victory ensured continuity in foreign policy for the new EU and NATO member which is contributing 120 troops to the US-led coalition in Iraq.

"Continuity of the foreign policy has been secured.

3 countries move toward euro, U.S. banks seek uniform rules

Bloomberg, Reuters, AFX

3 countries move toward euro

.

Estonia, Lithuania and Slovenia on Sunday got a head start over the rest of Eastern Europe in the race to adopt the euro by becoming the first to establish formal links with the European currency.

.

The three nations joined the European Union's exchange-rate mechanism, starting a two-year test of currency stability that paves the way for them to switch to the euro as early as 2007. The step widens an economic split among the 10 mostly Eastern European countries that entered the EU on May 1. Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary have said they are unlikely to adopt the euro before 2008. (Bloomberg)

.

U.S. banks seek uniform rules

.

U.S. banks urged global regulators to eliminate country-to-country differences in new banking guidelines designed to minimize risks.

.

On Saturday, central bank governors and regulatory heads from the G-10 industrial nations approved a rewrite of global rules governing how much cash banks set aside as a buffer against risks. (Reuters)

.

THOMAS COOK,a tourism company, said it planned to return to a 40-hour workweek from 38.5 hours in Germany and to reduce wages to cut overall labor costs. (AFX)

.

STATOILof Norway said production at its Snorre and Vigdis oil fields in the North Sea returned to near normal on Sunday, two days after a strike ended. (Reuters)

The benefits of switching to Euro:

Sugar smuggling 'soars in Hungary'

Black-market trade in sugar across the Romanian border into Hungary has rocketed since Hungary joined the European Union, reports say.

A 25-30% hike in the price of sugar in Hungary since EU entry means it is a more profitable form of contraband than petrol, a report on Hungarian radio said.

Sugar in Hungary is now more than twice as expensive than in Romania.
