Dawn Breaks On A Sovereign Iraq But Death And Explosions Remain

BAGHDAD (AFP) -- Dawn broke over a sovereign Iraq Tuesday for the first time
since the U.S.-led invasion last year but it was business as usual for rebel
forces who apparently executed a U.S. soldier and fired mortars in Baghdad.

Following a hasty handover ceremony by the U.S.-led coalition and equally
rushed departure of its boss Paul Bremer, an interim Iraqi government was
given control of the war-torn country on Monday two days earlier than
expected, and with that the responsibility of dealing with the violence.

Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, however, will not be alone in his fight as a
strong foreign military presence of almost 150,000 mainly U.S. soldiers are
staying on in Iraq to help control the security situation.

Underscoring the tough task ahead, insurgents claimed they had executed U.S.
soldier Keith Maupin, who had been held hostage in Iraq for more than two
months.

Arab satellite news channel Al-Jazeera said early Tuesday it had received
video footage purportedly showing the hostage speaking then footage of a man
kneeling with his back to the camera in front of a ditch.

The man is then seen being shot dead, but his face is not shown, Al-Jazeera
said, adding that it was not broadcasting pictures of the killing.

The U.S. military was analyzing the tape but was unable to confirm the
claim, a spokesman in Washington said.

"We're in the process of reviewing the tape. Nothing further has been
decided at this point," said army Sergeant Major Lewis Matson, a spokesman
for the U.S. Central Command.

Maupin was the first U.S. soldier to be kidnapped since the war in Iraq
began.

Two other hostages, a U.S. marine and a Pakistani have been threatened with
decapitation by their captors unless detained Iraqis are released.

In addition, three Turks are being held in a wave of kidnappings that has
swept the country in recent months, resulting in the grizzly deaths of
several foreigners.

U.S. and Iraqi officials had warned of a spike in attacks during the run-up
to the transfer of sovereignty, which had been due to take place today.

Their fears were realized with more than 300 Iraqis killed this month alone
in suicide bombings, mortar attacks and gun battles, prompting in part the
decision to move forward handover day.

But Iraq's first full day as a fully sovereign country since the collapse of
the regime of Saddam Hussein last April was marked with a series of
explosions.

Insurgents fired four mortars in the center of Baghdad at about 00:30 A.M.
(2030 GMT, Monday) near to a mosque, the U.S. military said.

"There are no reports of any damage or injuries," a military spokesman said.
