--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- TURN UP THE HEAT ON 8/29 PERMIT FIGHT!ACTION ALERT * UNITED FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE http://www.unitedforpeace.org/nyc Temporary phone: 646-723-0980 ============================================ TURN UP THE HEAT ON 8/29 PERMIT FIGHT! * Keep calling Mayor Bloomberg: 212-788-3000 * Sign grassroots petition to repair Central Park grass http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/975111804 * Come to meeting TOMORROW Tues 7/13 to plan street protests around permit for later this week ============================================ Make Your Voice Heard in the Permit Struggle The city is still refusing to even talk to United for Peace and Justice about the use of the Great Lawn or the North Meadow in Central Park for the "World Says No to the Bush Agenda" rally on August 29. This has become a fight of national significance over the fundamental right to dissent. We need to turn up the heat...and we need your help. 1) KEEP CALLING MAYOR BLOOMBERG The Mayor has been receiving calls from all around the country. Keep up the pressure! Call 212-788-3000 to demand that we be granted the right to rally in Central Park. Mayor Bloomberg has the ultimate responsibility for this decision and needs to hear from as many people as possible. 2) GET READY FOR STREET PROTESTS It's time to take more public action, too. We are working on finding out what public appearances the mayor may be making this week. Depending on that information we will be calling on you to join a picket either at City Hall or at one of those appearances. Please be sure to check the UFPJ web site at http://www.unitedforpeace.org/nyc for updates or join in the planning by coming to our city-wide mobilizing meeting on Tuesday evening (July 13th) at 6:30 pm at our new office: 209 West 38th Street, 9th floor. 3) SIGN THE GRASSROOTS PETITION TO REPAIR THE LAWN http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/975111804 We also want to call your attention to a petition that has been initiated by individuals supporting our efforts to secure the park. As you know, the Mayor has been using the spurious claim that our rally will damage the Central Park grass as justification to deny our permit. Some supporters of UFPJ are asking people to pledge to volunteer four hours of their time to repair any damage that might result to the park's grass from our August 29 rally. We've appended their appeal below. Please take a moment to read it over, sign it, and then forward it to others. And please do this as quickly as possible. DON'T FORGET WHO WE ARE DEALING WITH Mayor Bloomberg is the same person who refused to let us march against the Iraq War on February 15, 2003. He is a Republican who has given $5 million of his personal money to the Republican National Convention. He is rolling out the City's red carpet for the people who lied to us about the need to go to war, who continue to attack everyone's civil liberties (and especially immigrants and people of color) and who pour billions of dollars into real weapons of mass destruction while gutting social programs here at home. We'll be sending more updates and calls to action in the days to come - together we can win this fight! ======================================== PETITION APPEAL: VOLUNTEER TO REPLANT CENTRAL PARK! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/975111804 Dear New Yorker, As you know, Mayor Bloomberg, and NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, are saying New Yorkers can't rally against the RNC in Central Park, because a demonstration there would damage the grass. Let's take this grass issue off the table: let's volunteer to clean up our own mess. We're pledging to give 4 hours of our time to the Parks department, to repair and clean up Central Park if the City permits our rally. We should also be ready to trade those 4 hours for other jobs, in other parks, sometime in the next year, to offset costs for re-sodding or other specialized repairs in Central Park, which may not be suitable for volunteer labor. Don't New Yorkers deserve free speech, AND nice parks? It shouldn't be so hard, if we all pitch in. Click below to sign our petition to Mayor Bloomberg, and pledge to volunteer: NOTE: Since you are pledging to volunteer, please sign the petition ONLY if you live in the NYC area! If you do not, please forward it to someone who does. Your name and address will not be shared, and will be used only to contact you about volunteer opportunities for NYC parks, if the petition is successful and the RNC rally is permitted. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/975111804 And don't forget to forward this message! Our goal is 1,000 volunteers, but we're guessing many more will be ready to help. The more volunteers we can offer, the stronger our case will be. ============================================ NY ACTION ALERT * UNITED FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE http://www.unitedforpeace.org/nyc Temporary phone: 646-723-0980 To subscribe, visit http://www.unitedforpeace.org/email ============================================ AUGUST 29, THE WORLD SAYS NO TO THE BUSH AGENDA!
