McManus responds to FrontpageMag Buckley article Please give this widest dissemination. It is long overdue that people be held accountable for what they say with reckless abandon, about others, to further their own ambitions: July 7, 2004 For publication by FrontPageMag.com From: John F. McManus, Council Member and Official Spokesman, The John Birch Society Your "Farewell, Chairman Bill" tribute to William F. Buckley, Jr. missed the main accomplishment of this man. He indeed became the spokesman for "conservatism," but he took it farther and farther to the left during the past half century. And that is why he became such a darling of the nation's liberals. When he launched his magazine, no conservative would have supported the giveaway of the Panama Canal, compulsory national service, abortion, gun control, pornography, NAFTA, GATT, legalized prostitution, and so much more. But he eventually stated his approval of each of those positions and many more. Sad to say, he took many Americans along with him. What many seem to forget is that the standard for Americans isn't a shifting, Buckley-defined "conservatism." It is the U.S. Constitution, not a "respectable" form of conservatism that surely was respected by liberals and internationalists. The only occasions that found him mentioning the Constitution happened to be those when he was calling for a constitutional convention which, if one were held, would surely have seen the venerable document rewritten, even destroyed. You described him as a "devout Catholic" without knowing, it would appear, that he called for the Catholic Church to "reconsider its position" on abortion as far back as 1966. That deviation from Catholicism led his brother-in-law and once closest friend, L. Brent Bozell, to denounce him in public. Bozell's wife Patricia joined in the denunciation. His book Nearer My God, supposedly his "autobiography of faith," never bared his own beliefs, only those of several others. And his many novels laced with sex came as little surprise after he wrote articles for the pornography-laden Playboy and Penthouse magazines. "Devout" Catholic? Hardly. Yes, he founded and led the Young Americans for Freedom, a much-needed youth organization. But when his pronounced turn to the left could no longer be stomached by even his youthful followers, the YAF conventioneers meeting in 1977 issued their own rebuke to their once-revered leader. They blasted him for having joined the Council on Foreign Relations, refusing to call for the U.S. to quit the United Nations, defending Henry Kissinger, calling for legalization of marijuana, and more. Buckley not only befriended the socialists and Big Government champions of the neoconservative movement, he actually advocated their causes as far back as 1952. While serving the CIA in "deep cover" (his description), he wrote an article for the January 25, 1952 issue of Commonweal magazine calling for "a totalitarian bureaucracy within our shores [and] the centralization of power in Washington." That he would then turn to CIA veterans James Burnham and Willmoore Kendall for their assistance in launching National Review should not be overlooked. It should be no surprise that Buckley claimed as one of his most important achievements his expelling The John Birch Society from the conservative movement. Our organization didn't have to be expelled from what Buckley was leading; we wanted nothing to do with his style of "conservatism." For those truly interested in gaining a factual insight into the career of this great deceiver, I offer my thoroughly documented book, William F. Buckley, Jr.: Pied Piper for the Establishment. Buckley himself acknowledged its existence saying that the only criticism we made of him was his membership in the Council on Foreign Relations. That is patently false, and so is any portrayal of this man as an ideal American. **************************************************************************** **************************************************************************** **************************************** "The Founding Fathers knew that even the best designed government wouldn't work if the people were not righteous, moral and G-d fearing - if they didn't love liberty and cherish it."
