The more it fails, the more it will have to rely on the United States to prop it up. The more the United States props up Allawi, the more discredited he will become in the eyes of the Iraqi people - all of which creates yet more opportunities for the Iraqi resistance to exploit. 'We will suffer a decade-long nightmare that will lead to the deaths of thousands more Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis. We will witness the creation of a viable and dangerous anti-American movement in Iraq that will one day watch as American troops unilaterally withdraw from Iraq every bit as ignominiously as Israel did from Lebanon.' Of all the nonsensical arguments offered that made a case against the US attacking Iraq, one argument rose above the hysteria and paranoia: The attempt to 'democratize' Iraq by outside 'infidel' force was likely to fail. With this argument there is no need to apologize for the insanely cruel Hussein, or to inflate the idea of US imperialism. In a sane world, the people of Iraq should have been overjoyed that Hussein was gone and that if they wanted freedom and democracy, the world's most powerful country AND the world community would help them obtain these ideals: But this is NOT a sane world. Religious fervor can trump self-interest - and we should know this by now. However, George W Bush does NOT know it, and in fact, the neocons view religion (similar to mullahs and ayatollahs) as a tool to further their aims: The neocons aims consist of removing, by force if necessary, any threat to US dominance. This is NOT identical to imperialism though in practice, the difference may not be noticable. But it is different. They are idealists in their own twisted way. What zealots aren't? Scott Ritter has been right all too often in the past. His words should be taken very seriously. It is important that we not only oppose what the Bushites are doing; it is important to understand correctly the actual problem in order to counteract it and predict it. Ritter will probably be vindicated again. Gerry Dantone (Note: I am the Coordinator for the Center for Inquiry - Long Island.) www.cfimetrony.org *** (2) The return of "Burn!" No sooner does Portsider Jon Olsen suggest a revival of Gillo Pontecorvo's anti-imperialist 1969 epic "Burn!" than news arrives that the picture will be running at New York's Film Forum (filmforum.org) for 2 weeks! A new, 35mm, 'complete, uncut version' will be screened September 24-October 7. Marlon Brando as William Walker, Sandino's mercenary enemy. This has to make any ten-best list of revolutionary fiction films. THE GREAT DIVIDE - Forge Hardcover, 352 pages/$6.99 With the United States Presidential election coming up, citizens are tuning into CNN, Fox News Channel, and the local networks to hear the latest insults the Republican and Democratic parties are hurling at each other. Or, if they're already tired of the electoral process, they can get an update on the constant crisises the United States faces. Gas prices are rising at an alarming rate, and we're still under the continuous threat of a terrorist attack. The current administration is waffling on the 'reality' of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and Osama bin Laden remains at large. In their chilling thriller, THE GREAT DIVIDE (A mass market paperback original; July 29, 2004), New York Times bestselling author Frank M. Robinson and freelance journalist and screenwriter John F. Levin astutely illustrate the current political and social climate of our chaotic world. Using the increasing depletion of America's oil supply and soaring gas prices as a springboard, the authors delve into the very real idea that if we don't do something about our energy resources soon, the United States may not only be facing a national catastrophe, but anarchy as well. Robinson and Levin explore a myriad of 'What Ifs,' including: - Unemployment may soon soar due to the lack of available gasoline for commuting. - The old and poor may not be able to afford to heat their homes next winter. - Desperate citizens may start hijacking fuel trucks. - American agriculture and industry may come to a standstill. - The US could potentially split into different factions over remaining energy resources. Imagine this - It's 2014, and the United States is in deep trouble. Due to an inept execution of a flawed foreign policy in the Middle East, almost all of the US's oil imports have been cut off. The country doesn't have enough national energy resources to go around, and there's sectional rivalry for what's left. Without oil, people can't stay warm and they can't work. The West has most of the nation's resources and wants to hang on to them. The East desperately needs its fare share. The President has neither the power nor the prestige to mediate between them. Now the country is in the grips of the harshest winter in years, and rationing has led to unrest and rioting in the streets. And in the hallowed halls of the Capitol, some who have sworn to preserve our nation's union are secretly plotting its demise. As masses freeze in Chicago and the Northeast, fuel-sufficient Sunbelt conspirators seek to separate themselves from the rest of the nation. They want to make their own foreign policy and govern by their own rule. And to accomplish their agenda, they will resort to blackmail, bribery-and even murder. Originally published in 1982, this new, updated version of THE GREAT DIVIDE eerily reflects the issues that tap into the pulse of our current political and social climate. Frank M. Robinson is the bestselling author of Waiting and The Power, and co-author of The Glass Inferno and The Prometheus Crisis. He lives in San Francisco. John F. Levin is a screenwriter and freelance journalist whose work has appeared in New West, Oui, and McCall's. *** (4) In response to the reader query where the complete 9/11 report can be gotten: http://www.9-11commission.gov/report/911Report.pdf or at a bookstore under the title The 9/11 Commission Report: Final Report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States *** (5) AFP July 24, 2004 Fahrenheit 9/11 playing well with critical swing voters ROCHESTER, United States (AFP) - Fahrenheit 9/11, the blockbuster documentary that slams President George W. Bush's handling of the war on terror, is playing well with a critical voting bloc, according to a survey. Independent or swing voters are not only flocking to see the movie in numbers equal to those of Democrats, but an overwhelming majority of them are lapping it up, according to a Harris Poll. More than two-thirds (70 percent) of self-styled independent voters who saw the doucumentary came away with a postive impression of it, compared to 89 percent of Democrats and 44 percent of Republicans. And more than half of the independents (56 percent) said they thought the movie was fair to President George W. Bush, versus 85 percent of Democrats and 30 percent of Republicans. The results of the online poll appear to contradict predictions of some right-wing critics of the movie who had predicted it would only appeal to Democrats and hence have little or no effect on public opinion. It may also give Republican strategists pause for thought just over three months from the presidential election in which swing voters are expected to carry the day for one or other party. The online poll of 2,242 adults conducted earlier this month also found a sizable Republican minoritiy rated the movie as positive (44%), while about a third felt it even gave the president a fair crack of the whip. The film, by director Michael Moore, which took top honors at the Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites) in May, bashes Bush over the war in Iraq (news - web sites) and for an alleged erosion of US civil rights amid the war against terror, and has beat all previous box-office records for a documentary.
