Bin Laden virus warning issued
July 24, 2004 - 9:04AM

Emails purporting to contain evidence of Osama bin Laden's suicide contain a
"Trojan horse" that can allow hackers to take over infected computers,
security experts warned.

"Computer users who fall for the bin Laden hoax may be hit by a Trojan
horse," the antivirus firm Sophos warned, naming the new scheme the Hackarmy
Trojan horse.

"Thousands of messages have been posted onto internet message boards and
usenet newsgroups claiming that journalists from CNN found the terrorist
leader's hanged body earlier this week," the security firm said.

The messages point to a website where a file can be downloaded, purporting
to contain photographs. In reality, Sophos said, the file contains a Trojan
horse which can allow hackers to gain remote control of an infected
computer.

"Hackers and virus writers will try all kinds of tricks to entice people
into downloading their malicious code," said Graham Cluley, senior
technology consultant for Sophos.

"It seems, this time, that the hacker has focused on the public's morbid
curiosity and appetite for news on the war against terror."

Bin Laden Virus Terrorizes the Web

Messages being posted to Usenet groups and message boards, entice users to
download malicious files by using a pitch that could peak the curiosity of
all of us. According to the Internet security firm, Sophos, here's the
pitch:

"Osama Bin Ladin was found hanged by two CNN journalists early Wedensday
evening. As evidence they took several photos, some of which i have included
here. As yet, this information has not hit the headlines due to Bush wanting
confirmation of his identity but the journalists have released some early
photos over the internet."

Once a user has downloaded and opened the file, their computer is infected
with the Hackarmy Trojan horse. The trojan relays vital information to a
hacker such as IP address, system up-time and system information then allows
the hacker to take control of a pc. Infected computers may be used for
malicious purposes such as denial of service attacks and virus dissemination
among other things.

At the moment, the bin Laden linked virus is not circulating via e-mail. For
