Documents like the DSM of Am. Psychiatric Association (Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual) are political blueprints as well as scientific
documents. Read Alan Stone's "Law, Psychiatry and Morality". Stone was
Harvard Professor of Law and Psychiatry. He makes no apology for this role
in society. Succintly, a system like DSM intertwines "what should be"
according to some ideas of some people about the shoulds with "what is",
ie science.
Consider the example of "homosexual activism". A few decades ago, it was
standard procedure for psychiatrists to try "curing" homosexuality. DSM
changed that; not by any scientific revelation but by psychopolitics.
The why of it you can speculate about until the cows come home. But one
thing it illustrates is that psychopolitics does not always work by trying
to broad-band everyone as diagnosable. It works by having CONTROL over who
is diagnosed v. not diagnosed, ie POWER is the name of the game which is
your point below. Thus you must watch for the exclusions of
psychopolitical diagnoses as much as the inclusions.
It will be interesting to see what future psychiatry does with the many
sexual orientations. Polygamy is a big political issue in BC now with the
BC Government showing complete tolerance if not approval of the mormon
polgyamists while RCMP (federal) have them under investigation. In the
Maritimes there was an incest lobby a decade ago which repeatedly got
headline coverage. What then is sexual deviancy? Who defines it? Who cures
it?
