"MYSTERIOUS, SINISTER AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO THE ORDINARY CITIZEN"
Published first in 1966 in German under the title of Der Orden unter dem Totenkopf, Hohne's The Order of the Death's Head: The Story of Hitler's S.S. was translated by Richard Barry and first published in 1969, with its first American edition appearing via Coward-McCann, Inc. of New York, in 1970. Hohne's work is richly detailed, comprehensively researched, and one of the finest and most useful books of historical research and analysis ever compiled. The 1970 translated edition runs 583 pages and there are another one hundred pages of appendices and an extremely thorough index. Approximately one million German men, German-speaking men from other countries, and non-German recruits to the Schutzstaffel or S.S. of the National Socialist government of Adolph Hitler were eventually enrolled in the various departments of this State within the Third Reich. At its peak, in October of 1944, there were about 910,000 men in the Waffen-S.S. or Armed S.S., organized into thirty-eight divisions, most of which engaged in combat operations.
"The history of the S.S.", wrote Hohne, "told of a lost generation, brought up in the black pessimism of the anti-bourgeois cultural reaction" that was at the heart of National Socialism as it gained power. As Hohne puts it, the men who had the staying power to prove themselves and to become part of the S.S. were "attracted to an Order which promised them action and adventure as members of a primitive community serving a supposed genius and an ideal.
"They ... entered the S.S. Order because it satisfied two innate yearnings peculiar to the Germans: the yearning to belong to a military community promising fame, security and the glitter of martial exercises, and the yearning to form part of a secret elite, an all-powerful secret society.
"The S.S. Order was the answer to such daydreams; anyone who joined the S.S. became overnight one of the lords of the nation, a member of a secret society of selected noblemen, the main prop of the National Socialist State." In short, writes Hohne, they were the vanguard of "a new social order."
Seventy years ago, on July 20th of 1934, the Schutzstaffel was "formally constituted as a force separate" from the National Socialist Party's stormtroopers, or S.A. In principle the S.S. was still connected to other party organizations throughout the late 1920s, but Hohne notes that it started working more or less independently in 1930. On the 30th of June the S.S. and other police elements had helped 'purge' the Nazi movement of its S.A. leadership, effectively decapitating the private political army which had secured National Socialism's electoral victories.
Thirteen days after gaining this formal autonomy, the S.S. was perfectly positioned to bolster the "supposed genius" -- to whom all S.S. recruits pledged their loyalty -- when Adolph Hitler became the Chancellor of the Reich, upon the death of von Hindenburg. Hitler moved swiftly to consolidate his political power and to combine the offices of President and Chancellor. Once that was accomplished, a period of slow growth ensued. The S.S. Guard units were renamed "S.S. Totenkopfverbande" in the summer of 1936.
Eight years later, this neo-pagan 'secret society,' so strictly controlled that even Hitler's chief of the air force, Hermann Goering, did not know all that they had under their table of organization, was one million strong. Fanatically loyal to their Fuhrer, the S.S. controlled the slave labor facilities, the concentration camps, the clinics where retarded people were executed; and, the S.S. was in control of much of German industry and all of its secret research.
Besides absorbing almost all police functions, and domestic intelligence, the S.S. began -- in 1936 -- "to lay the foundations of an historical determinism" as author Hohne puts it. Heinrich Himmler believed he had the ability to commune with the spirits of German Princes and Kings who were long dead. According to Hohne, he encouraged this occultism in others to bolster the unique identity of belonging to the S.S., and to make it an Order in fact, as well as in name.
FICTION MIRRORS THE HISTORICAL REALITY, SEVEN DECADES LATER
Very few people in the United States and in other English-speaking countries, have not heard of "The Raiders of the Lost Ark", the extraordinary adventure movie directed by Stephen Spielberg and written by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman. Many millions of people have seen this amazing movie, which introduces the idea that Adolph Hitler and his Reich were feverishly seeking to acquire occult books, occult items and ancient totems. Agents of the Reich, meaning S.S. men, in particular, were seeking to gain control of The Ark of the Covenant. The Lost Ark of the ancients of Israel.
In a very real way, Spielberg's adventure tale has resculpted the public's knowledge of what Hitler's Reich was really all about. Just as an image in a mirror may be only partly accurate, so it may be that Spielberg's "Raiders" is only partly accurate. But this adventure story and its basic premises -- that the S.S. was searching the world for occult secrets in the 1930s -- has taken on substance as being historical truth.
Comes now a similar and similarly amazing cinematic fiction, which begins with U.S. Army rangers engaged in a raid on a Scottish island in October of 1944. Released to theaters in April of 2004, "Hellboy" has been issued in a special two disc set on DVD. At first glance it seems to be nothing more than a very glamourized and loud film version of a somewhat popular comic book series. In fact, the script, the events, and the symbols used in "Hellboy" indicate that the creator of the comic, and the screenwriters ( which includes the director, Guillermo del Toro ), have a fundamental understanding of the occult and of the nature of the struggle between good and evil in the late 20th Century. "Hellboy" looks like comic book fluff brought to the silver screen. It is a peculiar mixture of humor, absurd situations, and deadly serious action that belies its true nature. "Hellboy" is a carrier device.
It is a propaganda vehicle for those who are truly engaged in the centuries' long fight against ultimate evil. There is every indication that it is the product of a long-standing Faction 2 Cell, a group willing to admit to being part of the Knights Templar.OCTOBER 9th, 1944 ~ 1:00 AM IN SCOTLAND
"Hellboy" begins at this precise time, in the precise place of Trondhem Abbey on an island off the coast of Scotland. As the movie begins, we see a U.S. Army team being deployed in a driving rain. They aren't sure what they are there for, but the civilian guide for the operation, one Professor Broom, soon helps them identify their target. They come upon the ruins of the Abbey -- which he notes sits on an intersection of "Ley lines" -- and there they see a team of German soldiers flanked by Nazi banners, assembling a peculiar device. The banners themselves speak of the occult nature of the Nazi mission. They feature a stylized Red Dragon covered by the swastika of National Socialism. Broom tells the unit commander, as he surveills the German team, that he sees Karl Rupert Kronen directing the assembly of the machinery. Kronen is dressed all in the black and silver of an S.S. officer.
He's identified as the head of the Thule occult society and the principal assassin for Adolph Hitler. There's also an S.S. general on the scene and one other, most peculiar individual ....
Grigori Rasputin, the Mad Monk of the Romanovs. No, he's not dead, he's not a corpse rotting since 1916. He's preparing to use both black magic and Nazi scientific research in order to change the course of history, to produce "a miracle" for Hitler.
Courtesy of a fellow News Agent from Rumor Mill News, the precise positions of the planets on October 9th, 1944, were plotted and some of their symbolism noted. It seems that whoever developed this particular storyline for "Hellboy", and it is a crucial one, had a very strong grounding in astrological symbols and the Sabian Symbols in particular. Our research agent notes that at the hour in question, there had just been a partial eclipse of the moon, and that the Sun, Mercury and Mars were all in the sign of Libra: "A very auspicious time for rituals and for time jumps". The moon is in its exalted position, in Cancer at the 16th degree. And here's the Sabian Symbol imagery for that sixteenth degree --

And that is exactly what is depicted in the opening sequences of "Hellboy". The man is Grigori Rasputin. The very ancient book is Des Vermis Mysteriis and with the help of Kronen's machinery, and the S.S. operating crew, Rasputin uses a magic incantation to open a portal to another part of the universe. It appears as a swirling pattern of electrical discharges, which forms ... a Mandala. Then the portal opens and Rasputin seeks to summon The Seven Gods of Chaos.
His miracle, to be delivered for The Furher, is to bring the Seven Gods to Earth, where they will destroy all of the enemies of the Reich. And in his words, then, "there will be a new Eden." In other words, a utopia.
The U.S. Army team, with Dr. Broom in assistance, attacks the Nazi soldiers and Kronen, and a bloody fracas ensues. The machinery is blown to pieces, the mandala-like portal is collapsed and Rasputin is sucked into the void. Disappeared.
