Yale Paper Says Bush a Hypocrite on Cuba

Washington, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) US President George W. Bush is
supporting the interests of elite businessmen who trade with the
Island,
while denying Cuban-American close connection with their relatives in
Cuba, Bush's alma mater criticizes Wednesday.

According to the Yale Daily News online, Bush should not allow US
companies to trade with Cuba while he keeps Cuba-American families out,
denying them the right to visit their loved ones in Cuba.

At the same time Bush tightened the restrictions on travel for Cuban
Americans with families on the Island, US agribusiness has profited
from
selling agricultural goods to Cuba.

Bush severely restricted travel to Cuba by Cuban Americans, permitting
only immediate family members to visit once every three years and, in
an
attempt to keep US currency from the Cuban economy, he tightened the
rules on remittances, so Cuban Americans can now send only small sums
of
money to immediate family members.

The administration"s policy is hypocritical, the university daily
asserts.

American food companies have grossed $243 million in food sales to
Cuba.
Why should large companies be able to sell millions of dollars of food
to Cuba while Cuban-Americans with relatives in Cuba cannot help them?

Cuban-Americans with relatives on the Island have the largest stake in
the welfare of Cuba and should have the most rights to travel and send
money according to their own judgment, the daily declares.

The university paper points out that Warren Staley -with close ties to
the Bush administration and a major supporter of Bush's 2004
presidential campaign- is chairman and CEO of Cargill, Inc., an
American
company that has pioneered in food sales to Cuba.

Cargill has sold over 500,000 metric tons of food products to the Cuban
state for tens of millions of dollars. In the first half of 2004 alone,
Cargill grossed over $20 million in sales to Cuba.

Growing Challenges to Bush Cuba Travel Restrictions

New York, Sep 15 (Prensa Latina) Opponents of President Bush's Cuba
travel and aid restrictions see hurricane damage as a fresh opportunity
to go after Bush and other Republicans on an issue severely affecting
Cuban-American and Cuban families, Tampa Tribune online published
Wednesday.

Bush limited Cuban visits to only close family members once every three
years and sharply curtailed money and supplies that can be sent to the
Island in order to economically suffocate the Cuban revolution as Cuban
families feel the pain.

In Washington, with budget legislation nearing approval this week, the
Senate Appropriations Committee passed a bill blocking travel limits
and
easing restrictions on business people trying to sell food and medical
supplies in Cuba.

Tampa Democratic Congressman Jim Davis filed an amendment to spending
legislation that would allow Cuban-Americans visit their relatives
every
year without applying for a specific license, the newspaper reports.

The sudden burst of activity coincides with recent damage to Cuba by
hurricanes Charley and Ivan. Davis pointed out that his amendment would
let Cuban-Americans make emergency trips beyond annual visits, the
Tampa-based newspaper noted.

"This isn't about politics," the congressman said, "This is about the
fundamental right of family to visit each other. The hurricane is the
most recent example of how important it is for families to be able to
help families."

Opposition to the Bush policy is growing, maintains Joe Garcia, a
Cuban-American political authority and senior adviser to the New
Democrat Network, according to the Tampa Tribune.

"A significant percentage of Cuban-Americans think this policy is
ridiculous," Garcia said. "The hurricane and everyday events in Cuba
make it clearer and clearer that his policy is ludicrous." ile/ccs/ima/
