[Editor's Note: The following fax was transmitted to John Foster
"Chip" Berlet at his place of employment, Political Research
Associates (PRA), 8 March 1996:
"Dear Mr. Berlet:
"It seems that you have had sufficient time to respond to the
questions contained in my letter of November 1995.
"Should I take it that I can quote you as `no comment'?
"The letter will be published with or without your formal response.
"However, I thought you should have another chance to reply.
"Sincerely, Ace R. Hayes
"P.S. Your `Militia Nation' (1 March 1996 Internet) is one hell of
a conspiracy theory. It reads like an FBI report."
No response has issued from behind PRA's barricade of arrogant
silence. Perhaps there is an explanation which will only become
obvious when the people of America replace Imperial government with
a democracy which releases all public documents to the public.
Secret Police employment and pay-off records will be of special
interest.
The FBI Counter-Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) has merely had a
name change, according to retired FBI agent Wesley Swearingen in
his book "FBI Secrets: An Agent's Expose" (South End Press, 1995).
Thus, the proposition that COINTELPRO is alive and well has serious
supporting evidence. It is ironic that Berlet is quoted in this
book praising it while attacking everyone who wants to prosecute
Secret Police death-squad members. These jack-booted storm troopers
are, he claims, being "scapegoated" along with Jews, welfare
mothers and gays. This is absurd on its face.
When people read the letter Berlet refuses to answer -- perhaps
others will want to ask the same questions. COINTELPRO is as
dangerous to democracy, liberty and justice today as it has always
been. Those who protect COINTELPRO by diverting attention toward
pseudo-threats are equally dangerous to America's democratic values.

Dear Mr. Berlet:
Having finally met you, I find you to be a far less dangerous
character than I had expected. Indeed, you were so underwhelming,
I was almost disappointed. Playing word games and doing parlor
tricks for the local rubes adds to your charm.
So, let me give you the chance to answer some charges, questions
and issues you have dodged for so long.
Item #1) Why did you attend a cabal of Imperial spooks at John
Train's pad with John Rees? How many such Secret Service sit-downs
have you attended in the past twenty years?
Item #2) Do you or have you worked for the ADL or not? Be specific.
Item #3) Why have questions about "Beacon Fund" been stonewalled?
Item #4) What is your documentation for your 24 April 1995 attack
against me on Internet? Whom have I "scapegoated"? What is the
denotation of "conspiracism"?
Item #5) What is the documentation that the IRS has audited PRA?
Item #6) What was your relationship with CIA agent Sal Ferrera at
College Press Service?
Item #7) Have you or will you repudiate the use of your report,
"Clouds Blur the Rainbow," by the FBI for an investigation of a
legal political organization?
Item #8) Spotlight, 6 November 1995, has done a positive review of
Holly Sklar's new book, "Chaos or Community," and offers it for
sale through "Liberty Library." Does this mean that, as the Pope of
PC, you will now have to excommunicate Ms. Sklar for the crime of
being "wooed" by the Right? (Copy enclosed.)
Item #9) The expose on "Feds, Fun and Fascism" was in "Soldier of
Fortune." The cover-up for same comes from the entire ADL apparat:
SPLC, CDR, PRA, NWCAMH, CHD, MHRN, et al. (Copy enclosed.)
As a person who once despised SoF and supported ADL, I am annoyed
that I now have to read SoF for serious investigative journalism
and must hold everything put out by ADL and its pseudo-pods as
probable COINTELPRO psyops. I resent being lied to by the Left.
I expect to be lied to by the Right and Middle.
You yourself said, "...they [ADL] linked up with [the] right-wing,
reactionary, paranoid infrastructure of intelligence agents, local
police and private right-wing spies, which has been revealed
repeatedly over the years...
"In fact, all over the country ADL's been spying on leftists for
many years.
"It's inappropriate for ADL to say that it's defending the rights
of all people, including Arab-Americans against bigotry, and it's
spying on the Arab-Americans and handing the files over into a
quasi-public-private spy network. You can't do that. It's flatly
unethical; it's immoral." (Interview transcript, 23 July 1993,
KPFA Berkeley, Calif.)
Since you profess such concern with ethics and morals, why don't
you do a major expose of ADL as an Imperial State "private"
spy-and-lie op?
(I noted that your 1993 remarks about ADL came in the middle of the
ADL spy scandal in San Francisco. However, since the lid on the
scandal has been resecured, you have been back in bed with ADL,
e.g., Portland, Oregon, "Freedom From Fear" conference, October
1995. I, therefore, expect you will find some excuse to avoid the
above challenge.)
Item #10) Do you know a person calling himself "Paul de Armond"?
He claims to know you "fairly well." I am enclosing a copy of some
of his ad hominem ravings.
I want you to either publicly repudiate his name-calling or I will
have to assume that "hate speech" by your friends is acceptable to
you.
Item #11) Your name appears next to the name Bill Lemmer in the
first issue of Public Eye in 1977. Lemmer, a coordinator for the
VVAW [Vietnam Veterans Against the War], was the star government
witness in the Gainsville 8 trial in 1973. He testified that he
had been an FBI informant since 1971. This was widely reported in
mainline media. Why were you working with him in 1977?
Item #12) Your selection of associations over the years is bizarre,
at best. You were promoting CIA-financed writings at the National
Students Association -- after it was exposed as CIA funded. You
worked with CIA agent Sal Ferrera at the College Press Service. You
worked with FBI informant Bill Lemmer at Public Eye. You attended
secret spy meetings with John Rees of the John Birch Society. You
are in and out of bed with ADL so often no one can be sure whether
you are still in love or not. You even joined "Chicago Area Friends
of Albania" when CIA was setting up such front groups by the dozens.
Do you make such choices all by yourself or do you have a control
officer?
Your response to these questions would be appreciated.
And, on a personal note, it was really rather stupid of you to
advise everyone at Laughing Horse and those who will watch the
event on cable TV that I had your "secret" home address -- although
I wonder why I bother to advise you on how not to make a fool of
yourself. I suppose it is because I really hold no animus for you
personally. I am, however, outraged by your political disinformation
campaign which only serves the interests of the Imperial State. If
you ever decide to oppose the real fascism of the Imperial State,
as is being done by the 15 organizations reported on the first page
of this issue of the Free Press [November/December 1995], I would
be pleased.
