As Teo says here, AIDS is a lousy weapon, but an excellent way to cull the population of its "least desirable elements," namely poor blacks and drug addicts. AIDS is very difficult to get--you have to *work* at it, including repeated infections. In other words, you have to be extraordinarily stupid to get AIDS, because preventing it is easy. The gay community realized this early on, instituted aggressive community education efforts, and the rate of new infections among gays dropped almost to zero. At the same time, it started to rise asymptotically among poor blacks and drug addicts, two groups notoriously difficult to reach with health education, although for very different reasons. While this was happening in the U.S., the disease was beginning to decimate entire countries in Southern Africa and Asia. At a very rough estimate, sixty to seventy percent of the adult population of Sub-Saharan Africa is HIV positive; AIDS cases are rising sharply in India, Thailand, and China, as well as in Russia and the Central Asian republics. I don't know about Latin America other than Cuba, but I suspect there is a large hidden HIV+ population there. In short, it looks very much as if AIDS was designed to strike "expendable" populations across the globe. In the U.S., it was introduced in the gay community, which was known to have a considerable overlap with target groups--that is, poor blacks and drug users--but which was predominantly white and affluent and therefore had the resources to limit the spread of the disease among its members. In Africa and Asia, the primary vector was prostitutes, whose customers, once infected, proceeded to infect their spouses. And now, roughly twenty years after its presumed introduction, AIDS is in fact killing off large chunks of those expendable populations. The one unanswered question is, of course, why. I doubt that mere population control is a sufficient explanation; but the probable answer lies in the vast mineral resources beneath the African and Asian continents, which the Oligarchy would love to get its hands on...
