-Caveat Lector- Dying stupidly is embarrassing.

Not dying stupid is a qualitatively better option for most people.

You've read about a CIA mercenary killing six middle-class people
in Wisconsin, you have seen things about that on TV, but what did
you see or read or hear about another event the same day, seven
Marines freezing to death during desert training in southern
California? A CIA mercenary shooting six people is something you
cannot do anything about, but seven Marines killed by a survival
training program that failed to teach them how to survive an
expected situation is something public attention would help with.
So would a court martial, but do we know there is any inquest,
any response, any change, or might the same thing happen again
next week?

The character training phase had supposedly ended with Parris
Island, and they had supposedly graduated to skills and knowledge
training at infantry and desert training schools. Not so, there was
not one qualified instructor present to show them how to survive
in three feet of snow. As a direct result of not being shown how to
make any of a variety of possible snow shelters or use their gear
in that context or to improvise insulation by tick or advising them
of priorities and strategies necessary to survival, they died stupid,
but it was not their fault. All they needed was one qualified guide.

If a helicopter had crashed, you could read about it. Helicopters
crash. Marines do not freeze to death in three feet of snow, so
if they do, you cannot read about that in your newspaper. The
ostrich heads have gone south for the winter, under the sand!

You can read about the eight Marine hypothermia death in training,
the eighth happened at Parris Island. You can read about that, because
an occasional death during arbitrary character-building exercises is
understandable. People who run when they might walk or stay
awake when they might sleep might occasionally die as a result
of some other arbitrary behavior contrasting with an arbitrary
circumstance in a sandbox. You can read about that rare Crucible
and Parris Island death in the Beaufort Gazette, or on the internet,
because an occasional death there or in a high school football game
is not stupid in the sense of easily being prevented, but you cannot
read about seven deaths in a survival training course, because that's
STUPID!!!

Can we trust that someone has learned something? Or can we
assume that an exposed Marine Corps training weakness has been
covered up as an aid to ignoring the causes of decadence? Shall
we write to our congressmen and ask if a court martial is underway?
