Afghanistan, Opium and the Taliban 

[In 2000], Afghanistan produced nearly 4,000 tons of opium, about 75 
percent of the world's supply, U.N. officials said. Opium -- the 
milky substance drained from the poppy plant -- is converted into 
heroin and sold in Europe and North America. The 1999 output was a 
world record for opium production, the United Nations said -- more 
than all other countries combined, including the "Golden Triangle," 
where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet.

The drugs threat to Afghanistan 

Growing opium poppy has been officially illegal in Afghanistan since 
2002. The 185 tonnes of opium produced [in 2001] - compared to the 
3,600 tonnes in 2003 - mostly came from the small area of northern 
Afghanistan then held by the Northern Alliance that later helped US 
forces topple the Taleban.

Although Burma's opium poppy production declined in 2003 for a 
seventh straight year, the country remained the world's No. 2 
producer behind Afghanistan. It also remains the primary source of 
amphetimine-type stimulants in Asia, producing hundreds of millions 
of tablets annually. Haiti's geographic position, weak institutions 
and subsistence economy have made it a key conduit for drug 
traffickers transporting cocaine from South America to the United 
States.
