To Whom It May Concern:
This email is to warn Americans about a dangerous piece of legislation
called Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). CAFTA was just
recently passed in the Senate and has now been sent to the House of
Representatives for approval. I am sending you this email, so you, my fellow
American, can help me in my quest to save our future generations and our
country. Before you stop reading this email, please give me a minute of your
time so I can explain what CAFTA is, and why CAFTA is so detrimental to our
society.
CAFTA is simply an expansion of the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA). NAFTA removes protective tariffs to increase trading with other
countries. This may sound like a good idea, but NAFTA has caused the US to
import more goods then export. When that happened American jobs were lost to
other countries. 766,000 high paying manufacturing jobs were lost due to
NAFTA. Also NAFTA has caused lower worker wages, created poverty, gutted
environmental laws, and eroded national sovereignty in the US. In addition
NAFTA has caused a $100 BILLION trade deficit, which according to the
chairman of the Federal Reserve, Alan Greenspan, this deficit is dragging
the economy. Furthermore NAFTA allows foreign corporations to bring suit
against the US and overturn US laws. For example a Canadian corporation
called Methanex has sued California for $970 million because they put a
banned on a toxic Methanex product called MTBE.
NAFTA expanded this agreement to Mexico, Canada, and the US. CAFTA
being an
expansion of NAFTA will expand the free trade agreement to Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic. If
CAFTA is passed in the House of Representatives, you can expect to see a
mass movement of American jobs to the counties listed above. This loss of
jobs will create more American poverty. If you would like to help yourself,
your family, and your fellow Americans please take action now and call your
House representative.
