--- Begin Message ----Caveat Lector- New 'California Flu' Raises Concerns Nationwidehttp://wjz.com/health/local_story_361231603.html (CBS) LOS ANGELES There are new health concerns this flu season as doctors are keeping a close eye on a strain that's believed to have originated in California and is now spreading across the country. The vicious flu bug that people are referring to as the "California Flu" comes complete with chest congestion, a high fever, and body aches. It's hit 80-year-old Paul Allen of Los Angeles hard enough it sent him to the emergency room. "Its pernicious. Its deadly, it gets in there and its infectious," says Allen. This most recent strain of the flue has California's name on it because doctors believe it originated in the Golden State. But now it's begun to spread nationwide. So far the hardest hit are California, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Kansas, and now Utah. With so many traveling this holiday season, doctors worry that it could quickly spread even farther and faster across the country. "You are definitely going to see some spread. As people get together for the holidays in close quarters, they pass the virus around," says Dr. Stephen Jones of Northridge Hospital in Los Angeles. So far the California Flu has hit children especially hard. Already one child has died from the virus in California. It's the complications from the virus that have doctors especially concerned. "Probably the most severe to look for would be trouble breathing, the development of pneumonia or dehydration," says Dr. Jones. The overload from influenza patients is already jamming emergency rooms throughout California. Health professionals say the best way to keep from getting this flu is to keep your distance from anybody who seems sick. Wash your hands on a regular basis, and because there's two more months before the end of the flu season, it's not too late to get a flu shot. ------------------------ Yahoo!
