--- Begin Message --- -Caveat Lector- I managed to catch a re-run of this Law And Order: CI episode tonight, and maybe can clarify a few things:

The name of this program is SERE not SEER.   It stands for Survive, Evade, Resist, Escape or Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape.  It is an official program at Fort Bragg, and alumni of this training also offer to train business execs and other interested parties.

You can check out their websites (Yes, Virginia, these people have websites) at:

Please be advised that Law and Order:CI is the edgier of all the Law and Order franchise.  The star -- Vincent D'Onofrio, who plays Lt Robert Goren -- is an avowed Bush-hater who actually collapsed on the set when he learned that Kerry had lost the election, and whose campaigning for Kerry led David Wolf (the producer) to issue an edict against politicking in the studio.  D'Onofrio has alienated some of his cast members and crew because of his strong opinions on these issues.

That said, other episodes included one in which prisoners were being kept incomunicado at a New York City prison as a result of Homeland Security and racial profiling, etc.  They were subjected to inhumane conditions and torture, and were not allowed lawyers, etc. and their mere presence was a closely-guarded secret.  It took the team of Goren and Eames to get a writ of habeus corpus to force the prison to free the unlawfully-imprisoned men, at virtual gunpoint.  It was a very political episode in an era of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo.

Backstory on the D'Onofrio character is itself worthy of a chapter in Sinister Forces!  Born to an alcoholic father and a schizophrenic mother, "Robert Goren" enlists in the Army and becomes an investigator for the military police.  Along the way, he has wound up in China, mysteriously, and understands Mandarin well enough to notice differences in accents.  He is borderline autistic, and sees patterns in things others ignore.  He is also very well-read in a wide variety of disciplines, and has a lot of strange friends in strange occupations.

He is a character worth watching, and his episodes are usually either very political or very psychological.  One episode on cults was fascinating;  they dropped terms like "psychic driving"  (from the Ewen Cameron experiments in Montreal) and "clear" (from Scientology) like mad.  (no pun intended)   The writers are obviously very plugged-in to some useful and unusual information and are not hesitant about using it.  D'Onofrio -- whom we all remember as Leonard Lawrence (Gomer Pyle) from Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" -- is an intense method actor who revels in this type of material.

Cheers,
Peter L.
