British military convoy lost in Salonica vegetable market
SALONICA, Greece, Apr 29, 1999 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX) -- Dozens of
NATO trucks found themselves stranded in a vegetable market Thursday
after a local protest group removed signs marking the road from the
northern port of Salonica to the border with Macedonia.

A convoy of 200 British trucks carrying containers and military
vehicles set out from the port, heading towards Macedonia to join the
NATO troops stationed there as a possible peacekeeping force if an
agreement is reached over the Kosovo crisis.

But a local protest group reacting against the airstrikes on Yugoslavia
removed some of the signs put up by NATO to mark the 60-kilometer (37.5
mile) long road linking the port to the border.

About 50 trucks in the convoy took a wrong turn before leaving the city
and found themselves in the local wholesale vegetable market.

''This was an effort to prove to NATO that the people of Salonica and
of Greece are against the bombings,'' said Agapis Sahinis, a member of
the protest group. ''We wanted to get the message across in a humorous
way.''

A Greek police escort eventually led the trucks out of the market and
to the border.

Greeks maintain friendly ties with fellow-Orthodox Serbs, and there
have been almost daily demonstrations around the country against the
alliance's bombing since the airstrikes began on March 24.

Salonica is a main supply point for the NATO forces stationed in
Macedonia, with thousands of troops and military equipment passing
through the port.

There have been widespread protests against the movement of NATO troops
through the city. Protesters on Wednesday blocked rail lines heading to
the Macedonian border, forcing a train carrying British

troops and military vehicles to return to Salonica.
