JONESBORO, Ark., April 26 /U.S. Newswire/ -- "Children don't
naturally kill, it is a learned behavior," says Lt. Col. Dave
Grossman, U.S. Army (Ret.), an expert in the field on human
aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime.

Lt. Col. Grossman is the director of the Killology Research Group
based in Jonesboro, Ark., that studies the methods and
psychological effects of how human beings circumvent their natural
inhibitions in order to kill others.

"Children learn to kill from violence in the home and most
pervasively, from violence as entertainment in television, movies
and interactive video games," says Grossman. "Throughout their
lives, children are desensitized to killing which is one of the
keys used in military and police training to overcome inhibitions.

"We are reaching that stage of desensitization at which the
inflicting of pain and suffering has become a source of
entertainment: vicarious pleasure rather than revulsion," Grossman
writes. "We are learning to kill, and we are learning to like it."

"We are providing our kids a how-to manual for killing without
a conscience," said Grossman on Sunday's "60 Minutes." "The same
basic mechanisms that we use step-by-step to make killing a
conditioned response in our soldiers are being done in the games
now that the kids play."

Lt. Col. Grossman was the lead trainer for the counselors and
clergy following the school shootings in Jonesboro, Ark. He is also
the author of "On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to
Kill in War and Society." He was a West Point psychology professor
and the founder of a new field of scientific endeavor, which he has
termed "killology." Grossman has been called as an expert witness
and consultant in United States vs. McVeigh and in the Michael
Carneal shooting case in Paducah, Ky.
