Alaska Gov. Murkowski Comments on West Coast Benefit from ANWR

The Governor of Alaska, Frank Murkowski released a article to the people
of the Northwest published in the Seattle Times today on how Alaskan oil
including future reserves of oil and gas in ANWR have and will benefit
their states. The article titled, ANWR exploration: energy for the west
coast, illustrates very well how for over 30 years the Northwest, in
particular Seattle, has benefited from the transportation of oil as well
as oil industry goods and services to Alaska.

Governor Murkowski has been a champion of the push for Alaskan energy
development during his 22 years in the U.S. Senate prior to becoming
Alaskas Governor. The article is more poignant however, in that Governor
Murkowski was originally from Seattle.

In the past 28 years the Alaskan oil industry has spent over
$3,761,850,000 in Washington State, and generated 12,000 full time jobs
there. Oregon has benefited with over 7,000 jobs and $468,470,000 worth of
business. The Cherry Point refinery near Seattle receives and processes
approximately of Alaskas oil.

The irony of the Governors remarks is that despite that the Washington
State Legislature in the past passed an official resolution supporting the
opening of ANWR and that the Seattle and Tacoma Chambers of Commerce as
well as a vast majority of the Seattle/Tacoma business community greatly
favor exploration of the ANWR Coastal Plain, Washingtons Senator Cantwell
has been a major ANWR foe and regularly tries to prevent ANWR legislation
to pass in Congress. This is a hugely hypocritical stance considering her
peoples and state official support and benefit from Alaskan oil.
