Dominici and Kempthorn Uphold ANWR

Senator Pete Dominici (R-NV) this week upheld the value and importance of
ANWR oil in his update and review of the National Energy Bill passed late
last year. The Senator who is the Chairman of the Senate Natural Resources
Committee commented in The Hill newspaper on the success of last years
Energy Bill and listed the 4 most important issues the nation needs to
tackle this year on energy. One of these four was the opening of the 10-02
Area of ANWR for oil and gas exploration.

Opening ANWR is the most meaningful thing Congress can do for domestic oil
production. I will continue to work hard in the coming months to ensure
the domestic security of this nation by taking up ANWR legislation as soon
as possible, Dominici stated.

Last year ANWR legislation was not included in the National Energy Bill
but rather brought onto the floor via the Defense Appropriations Bill
where it failed to gain the necessary 60 votes to overcome a Democrat led
filibuster. It was subsequently taken out of the bill.

This year ANWR legislation has already passed the House as a standalone
measure but faces an inevitable filibuster threat from Democrats in the
Senate. The Senate has also passed ANWR legislation as part of a bundled
budget resolution bill, but that bill is currently sitting stagnant in
joint conference committee. It is uncertain when either bill will make
their next steps.

In another address in Washington this week the U.S. Interior Secretary,
Dirk Kempthorne, beat the drum for ANWR. Secretary Kempthorne was speaking
to a Chamber of Commerce meeting on energy Wednesday and stated that
though global events may affect energy prices, the Bush administration's
policies are working. "We must tap into our greatest asset," Kempthorne
told business leaders, and that that included drilling for oil on 2,000
acres in ANWR.

The secretary said states that allow such drilling to happen should be
compensated.
