# Severe Arctic ozone hole predicted. (BBC) Plummeting temperatures high in
the Earth's atmosphere are doubling the rate at which the ozone layer is
being destroyed. The destruction is particularly high over the Arctic and
Northern Europe and could lead to an ozone hole as large as the one over the
Antarctic. Ironically, the cooling phenomenon is being blamed on the world-
wide increase in greenhouse gases - usually associated with global warming.

*** NASA unveils new Atlantis cockpit. CAPE CANAVERAL (AP) NASA unveiled a
modern, Boeing 777-style cockpit inside space shuttle Atlantis, an improve-
ment that astronauts say could save their lives. Instead of the usual array
of dials and knobs and three old-fashioned screens, Atlantis' cockpit now
has nine high-resolution, liquid-crystal computer screens, thus the moniker
"glass cockpit." Shuttle pilots say they will be able to obtain information
much more quickly during the crucial 8-1/2-minute climb to orbit. Also, the
data will be easier to read because of its organization and color coding.
NASA expects to keep flying its space shuttles for the next 10 or 20 years,

*** Smithsonian explores Ainu culture. WASHINGTON (AP) The mysterious Ainu
of northern Japan, a people whose culture, language and physical appearance
set them apart from other Asians, feature in a new Smithsonian exhibition
seeking to tell their story to Americans. Once a large trading and fishing
people living across a broad region, Ainu today number only about 25,000,
concentrated on Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido. In some ways, their
story parallels that of American Indians, overrun by outsiders in the 1800s,
their lands lost and culture threatened. Starting in January, the exhibit,
"Ainu, Spirit of a Northern People," will go on tour around the US. See

3. FREE ENERGY: CONFERENCE FEATURES "OVER-UNITY" DEVICES. Even as this is
being written, the much-traveled First International Conference on Future
Energy is continuing in a Bethesda Holiday Inn (WN 2 Apr 99). Yesterday,
mindful of my responsibility to keep WN readers informed, I attended the
opening. As I stood at the back of the room awaiting the start, one of the
organizers came up to me and said: "We have a security cop on the premises."
Well, OK. Tom Valone of the Integrity Research Institute opened the meeting
by telling the audience of about 100 what they came to hear: "A century of
energy oppression" is about to end - we would have free energy now if it
weren't for powerful economic interests. "How many of you want free energy?"
Every hand went up - mine included. He then led the audience in a chant of:
"We want free energy. We want ..." No, I'm not making this up.

A study being presented today at the International Conference on Integrative
Medicine in Seattle, claims that Echinacea, the world's top selling herbal
supplement, which is taken by millions to ward off colds and flu, has a side
effect - it increases the incidence of colds and flu. Previous studies had
merely indicated that Echinacea was not effective.
