Rallies held to warn of Darfur slaughter

Human rights groups around the world have held rallies warning of imminent civilian slaughter in Darfur.

About 30 human rights groups were involved in the rallies as part of the International Day for Darfur.

Sudan's Darfur conflict is set to worsen if African Union peacekeepers are not replaced by UN troops at the end of this month.

The Sudanese Government says UN forces are part of a Western conspiracy to erode Sudan's sovereignty and it will not allow the UN force.

The Government has moved thousands of its own troops into Darfur and is feared to be planning a "final solution" to the conflict in the form of all-out war with rebel groups.

Activists are warning that without peacekeepers, 2.5 million displaced people in camps could be slaughtered as part of an ethnic cleansing campaign by the Arab Government.
