We need to raise
$50,000 this week for
fair elections in Florida.

We're halfway there.

Give TODAY and we'll
tell Jeb Bush you
donated in his honor!

Dear Kris,

What is it with Florida?

It seems like every couple years, come November, some county in Florida is messing up an election. "Hanging Chads" and bad ballots in Palm Beach in 2000. Thousands of Broward County absentee ballots go missing in 2004. And in 2006, 18,000 electronic votes in Sarasota County are just LOST. Florida has 67 counties; they all need to GetItStraightBy2008.

Here's why your help right now is critical: a state audit of the machines will begin soon. But the people conducting the audit are active partisans, right down to the lead programmer, a Republican who has pledged that he will never be a "passive political participant."1

Yet when a judge decided to push back the test to bring independent auditors into the process, Gov. Jeb Bush expressed surprise, saying he only wanted them to play a backseat role.2 The need for an outside investigation is clearer than ever.

Donate $67 to our campaign – one dollar for every county in Florida – and help reach our $50,000 goal in the NEXT FOUR DAYS!

BONUS: If you donate today, we'll send a special note to Gov. Jeb Bush, telling him you donated in his name to support clean elections with audits and paper trails. Donations send a powerful political message that citizens consider this a VERY serious issue.

The recount and state audits are first steps, but they may not solve the real problem: votes that vanished before voters reached the final screen, and a ballot that one expert called a "poster child" for bad design.3

In an election this unreliable, a revote may be the only solution. Don't expect Florida politicians to allow one without a fight.

Common Cause needs to react quickly to this changing situation. We incur expenses every day – grassroots organizing, lobbying, and media outreach. It's money well spent, but our resources are stretched.

Help us hit $50,000 right now, and we'll let Jeb Bush know you care. Give $67 for the 67 counties in Florida!

Florida may be particularly prone to election mishaps, but it's not alone. There were problems in other states this year, too, as we know from thousands of calls to our voter hotline. We need a national solution if we have any hope of avoiding a meltdown in 2008.

Sincerely,

Chellie Pingree, President
Common Cause
