[WWW.CHINAVIEW.CN] -WASHINGTON, June 3 [2004] (Xinhuanet) -- The United States said on Thursday that transfer of power to Iraq could come before June 30,the scheduled date for the US-led occupation authorities to hand over sovereignty to an Iraqi interim government.

"I wouldn't rule out something earlier, if all the circumstances and planets aligned in that way, but right now, our focus is June 30th," State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said.

However, an anonymous US State Department official said that an earlier handover of sovereignty to Iraq was not likely.

On Tuesday, Iraq's new president Sheikh Ghazi al-Yawar, vice presidents Ibrahim Jaffari and Roj Nuri Shawis as well as prime minister Ayad Allawi took an oath in Baghdad, the first step of taking over sovereignty on June 30.

US President George W. Bush has promised to hand over "full" sovereignty to the Iraqi interim government but meanwhile will keep the 138,000 US troops currently stationed in Iraq "as long as necessary."

[EXCERPT]

This [difference between the Western and Islamic calendar] is perhaps why there is not much talk of "anniversaries" in the Islamic world, though surely they are celebrated in that culture. The tenth day of the first month, Muharram, is the holiest day in the calendar, and the celebrated birthday of Mohammed. In 1990 that date was equal to August 2, the day after Saddam invaded Kuwait, and the day that the UN issued its first resolution against that invasion, UNSCR 660.

It's easy to be unaware of an Islamic anniversary. For instance, when George Bush gave the "go" order to invade Iraq, on March 19, 2003, the Islamic calendar date was 16 Muharram, 1424 (Bush gave orders after sunset). This date equates to August 8 in the year 1990, which was the Islamic year 1411. 16 Muharram, 1411, was the day that Saddam Hussein announced the annexation of Kuwait!

Resolution 689, The final UN Security Council Resolution in regards to Iraq prior to the January 17, 1991 invasion by the original Coalition was issued on November 29, 1990. This translates into 11 Jumada al-Ula, 1411, and thus the 12th day of Jumada al-Ula begins on this day as well.

In the Gregorian year 2004, the 12th day of Jumada al-Ula matches ends at sunset on June 30.

Perhaps most important about June 30 is another more easily seen anniversary. It is the very date that the "Anglo-Iraqi Treaty" commenced in 1930. This treaty created an independent Iraq.

Two years later, Iraq was granted full soverignity by the UK on October 3; the very next day, the League of Nations (precursor to the UN) voted unanimously to give Iraq membership. On October 4, as the vote was counted, the Moon was conjunct the fixed star Antares!

What led up to the 1930 treaty was a less useful treaty signed between the same two parties on October 10, 1922. As is typical for such matters British, there were four planets in the constellation Virgo, but on that day the moon occulted the fixed star Aldebaran, though this event happened below the horizon and invisible in Iraq.

Nonetheless, such an event is important astrologically whether visible or not; and here we find a distinct, emerging pattern of planetary conjunctions with Aldebaran and Antares when it comes to Iraq ...
